Seems Dlink have been putting on-purpose backdoors in their routers.

I don't know which ones have been sold in NZ...

Last time I bought dlink was back in 2003 -- adsl modem / router. It wasn't too reliable.

This is interesting in that i wonder if Huawei have done the same. Their chips would need reverse engineering to figure that one out.

The hackers at <removed> say models DIR-100, DI-524, DI-524UP, DI-604S, DI-604UP, DI-604+, and TM-G5240 use the compromised firmware.

I've seen 524s about.

Appear to be wifi router only, not modem combos.

There are a couple of models that are good for flashing with open source firmware DD-WRT/TomatoUSB/Gargole router but other than that /avoid!

Ive avoided D-Link for many years - the only product of theirs that I owned that worked properly, was a 10/100mb NIC purchased many many moons ago... their routers and wifi gear drove me up the wall.

I have a Dlink single port modem that I got many moons ago for signing up to Vodafone ADSL, it syncs very well and is great as a spare modem, but had a port permanently open on the WAN side leading into the web interface.

In the end, I extracted the filesystem from a firmware upgrade package, fixed it's iptables rules and flashed it to the modem, I never expected to have to do that.

I always think of D-link as like the Norton of the consumer router world. Absolute rubbish but given away free so many places people assume it's decent or just don't care.

can't remember the last time I bought DLink - but I do remember the large crap pile of DLink Jank that sat in the office waiting for the E-Waste collection to come around. I'm pretty sure I've never seen a reliable piece of DLink jank....

off topic I know but - Please please please don't disparage the name Norton. Peter Norton wrote some of the most elegant, stable and innovative software ever put out for DOS and early windows. his stuff was stable fast and effective, in a world where PCs and software were notoriously unstable. He is the man who wrote Ghost - and I don't mean that bastardised version put out by Symantec but the elegant one that fits on a floppy and still works on Todays PCs.

Now - Symantec, that marketing company that buys other peoples work and cobbles ti together in a mish mash of cludgy cruddy claptrp, that's who you disparage.Taking a 1Mb app like gohst and making it a 600MB plus monster of uselessness.
