Hey all,

I am running a freeNAS with a shared folder of photos on it ~60 gig. My wife and I are on windows 7 laptops for our day to day stuff.

I want to shove a copy up onto the cloud so if our house ever burns down I can retrieve it. I am thinking of using skydrive as I have a 25 gig account and their additional storage pricing seems pretty reasonable.

Anyone know of a good way of getting it up there and keeping it up to date?

You could always use their Desktop sync client and move the photos into there. Then all the files in that folder will automatically sync up into your Skydrive account.

Keen to keep photos on a "always on" network share.
So far playing with the desktop client it appears the content needs to be local to sync.

Yes, skydrive won't sync network drives. Because of this sonyxperiageek was saying you need to sync them to your local skydrive folder and skydrive will automatically do the rest.

As it is a backup you probably don't need continuous synchronisation so there's many free programs that will do that for you. Old Freenas (now NAS4Free) had rsync so I presume its on the new version for you to sync from the server. From the client PC you can also use rsync or alternatives like freefilesync.

I haven't personally used it, but here's a 3rd-party backup client that will backup to dropbox, Skydrive etc. The downside is that you won't be able to access the content in Skydrive. But from the sounds of it you just want to use Skydrive as pure storage space anyway.
