Hi,
I need to add an additional wireless access point in my house when I get UFB next week.  The router (Fritzbox) will be in the garage and therefore coverage won't be great.  Any recommendations for something < $100.

Regards,
Alexis

Don't spend less than $300 on a wireless access point if you want anything with half decent performance and decent life time.

Unifi Pro would be my pick.

Otherwise you may as well buy a $15 TP-Link access point because everything sub-$100 performs about the same.

I got my eye on that new linksys wrt54g replacement
Basically anything with three antennas.

802.11n is capable of 60% actual throughput to airspeed. so a 150mbit router, less signal loss degraded speed = airspeed.
Airspeed x 0.6 = actual throughput

Actual throughput needs to be higher than 30mbits or 100mbits depending upon your fibre speed.

So I would be going for a 300mbit one, or one with 3x antennas on it. Usually around the $200 price mark at DSE.

You also need to make sure your client devices are also 802.n compatible.
An 802.11n access point or router will slow down to G speeds if one of the clients is a 54mbit/802.11g device which has a maximum throughput of 22mbits.

Also if one of your devices is only a dual (150mbit) or single chain (65mbit) then the router will usually also slow down for it, though some will dynamically switch depending upon which device its talking to at the time.

Remember too that wifi is not designed for streaming data to more than one device at a time. So dont expect to get super fast speeds to multiple devices at the same time - its super fast to one device at a time, with collision collapse being able to bring a super fast 300mbit router down to 20mbits as two people try and stream youtube at the same time.
