This is my first post and have been asking around in different forums for days with no luck. My ISP is Telecom and I have Windows 7 on my desktop.

Ok, I have a secondhand TP-Link TD-W8960n wireless modem/router and cant seem to get it to work properly. When I tried hooking it up straight to my PC all necesary lights turn on except the ADSL light which blinked a couple of times then went off. It isnt my line because I can connect my old D-Link modem and have access to the internet(which Im using now). I rang telecom and they said my line was only down when I connect the TP-Link but works with the D-Link. I then tried connecting the TP-Link to the D-Link and it worked. Problem was I only want the TP-Link as a stand alone but it doesnt work on its own so I tried doing a hard reset and now the TP-Link doesnt work with the D-Link anymore. It must be some setting I have to adjust but I dont know where to start. Anyone have the necesary settings for TP-Link TD-W8960n with Telecom? TIA.

Edit: I have updated the firmware to '1.1.1 Build 121009 Rel.86189'.

I have one of these, I would factory reset it, there is a reset pinhole at the rear, then connect it, go to 192.168.1.1 admin/admin and add the PPP username of user@xtrabb.co.nz and if you wish the DNS of

Primary 122.56.237.1
Secondary 210.55.111.1

Or auto assign if you wish

Thanks for your reply. Im a newbie novice at these things so you'll have to walk me through what to type and where to type it.

Ok, sure

Factory Reset: At the rear, next to the power connector is the Reset hole. With the power on, press a thin pen or paperclip into that hole until the lights flash. It will restart.

While on, and connected to the PC, with a LAN cable connected to the network port on the PC, open a browser and enter 192.168.1.1 into the address bar, where you may normally enter a website address. When the username and password requestor box pops up, its admin for both, lower case

The TP-Link GUI will pop up, go to Quick Setup, you will see the PPP Username field there, enter user@xtrabb.co.nz and anything for the password (its not required but the field needs to be populated), go Next, then alter the Wifi SSID if you wish, add WPA2-PSK and Save and Reboot.

You can add the wifi key in Wireless-Security

I just tried it but still no luck. Does it have something to do with the numerous other settings or do those stay as default?

I thought it would be a simple plug-and-play but so far its been a mare. I had a Thompson (the one telecom gave for free) but that died on me last week so got one of these. The only one that works is an older D-Link-302G (freebie from telecom).

OK, I currently have an internet connection with the TP-Link TD-W8960n connected to the D-Link as per before and I think that had to do with your suggestion of entering those DNS numbers because the [Internet Info status] changed from down to up and the 'e' light on the TP-Link modem is lit which never did before. So we're getting somewhere.

Edit: But now the wireless inst working properly. My laptop can detect the wireless but has limited access so cant use the internet.

The purpose of the factory reset, is to avoid any settings the previous user had set. Are you connecting the phone cable from the jackpoint to the TP-LINK? When you factory reset did you push the reset pin in then let go, or did you wait a few seconds so all the lights activated/changed?

My modem also doesn't have the DNS, I have it set to auto assign, and it auto assigns the IP's I gave to you.

It appears that the TP-LINK is operating as the wifi access point, but not the WAN, i.e. as if the phone line is connected to the D-LINK. I suggest, before touching anything first, shut down the two modems, and the PC, wifi devices, turn modems on, then the devices once the modems are supposedly up. And actually remove the D-Link, its not needed, its just complicating matters.

Either:
The TP-LINK is not yet factory reset so its carrying the past users settings
Its not connected to the DSL phoneline
Its faulty, do you know it works?

Yes the TP-Link has been factory reset as I wait until all lights come on before releasing the reset pin. When I try to get the TP-Link working on its own I connect the phone line to it but as it is now, the phone line is connected to the D-Link and an ethernet cable run from the D-Link to the TP-Link as thats the only way to get the TP-Link to work.Yes, the TP-Link seems to be operating as a wifi access point rather than the WAN. I hope the TP-Link isnt faulty (I bought off tradeMe) but seeing as it works when used as a wifi access point would this mean its not faulty?

NOTE:When I woke this morning the wireless seems to have fixed itself so my laptop has internet access but I'll try disconnecting the D-Link from the setup to see if it works without it.

Maybe tell us how WAN interface was configured. From memory these devices default to Australian VPI/VCI values that don't work here on PPPoATM connections, so please confirm these values.

Spark Max Fibre using Mikrotik CCR1009-8G-1S-1S+, CRS125-24G-1S, Unifi UAP, U6-Pro, UAP-AC-M-Pro, Apple TV 4K (2022), Apple TV 4K (2017), iPad Air 1st gen, iPad Air 4th gen, iPhone 13, SkyNZ3151 (the white box). If it doesn't move then it's data cabled.

I rang telecom before and they gave me these:

VPI: 0
VCI: 100
Multiplexing: VCMUX
MTU: 1500
Encapsulation: RFC 2364 (or 'PPPoverATM', also known as 'PPPoA')

No Static IP or Port 25 service; user@xtrabb.co.nz
Static IP or Port 25 service present; (Xtra username).xadsl@xtra.co.nz

I never seem to get a solid ADSL light on the TP-Link when I only have the TP-Link hooked up. I get a solid light when the D-Link is hooked up and telecom confirmed it.
