Greetings,

I am on Telecom VDSL2 with a Technicolor TG589vn V2 modem in BRIDGE mode to a 5th Gen Airport Extreme as LAN/WLAN over using PPPoE.

Question is: Is there a way for the Airport Extreme's LAN to use the remaining 3 wired LAN ports on the Technicolor modem? Apple onle gives you 3 wired LAN ports on the Airport Extreme and I need more wired ports. I don't want to add another switch if I don't have to.

example:  PC ---(wired LAN cable)---> Technicolor LAN port ---> Airport Extreme LAN port ---> Internet(PPPoE through Technicolor)

If this isn't possible, can anyone suggest a replacement VDSL modem/router with this capability?

Cheers

I don't think you can use an AE as a VDSL router, because they don't support VLAN tagging on the WAN port.

You could use the AE in bridge mode to add additional LAN and WiFi capability to the Technicolor though.

No, because the TG589 ports are on the WAN (Telecom) side of the network, not LAN side of the network after NAT has occurred.

You're not going to find any device that allows you do this without creating a complex setup such as VLANing the ports off and then using a patch cable from the Airport back to the modem which is going to use up two of your ports.

The solution is to spend $15 on a switch, or $20 if you need Gigabit.

Thanks for the recommendation. I should have mentioned that I have tried this config before but the Technicolor router couldn't handle all of my networked (wifi phones, tablets, laptops, powerline etc devices once I started gaming (BF4) and the router would just reset itself. Switching the LAN functions to the AE fixed this problem.

Thanks, sbiddle. This is what I suspected but wanted to check here. I asked Telecom Support and they didn't know. They suggested asking here.

Cheers

Btw, the AE was really easy to set up for PPPoE through the Technicolor modem.
