Hi,

Looking at getting at DrayTek Vigor 2860n-Plus but my main concern is the 5Ghz performance (coverage/signal strength and reliability) - although it is on the slightly more expensive side I am wanting to replace the combination of modem and router because it appears that no matter what I do I have to keep manually setting up the DMZ where as if I run it as a straight modem/router my bit torrent client (Transmission) can transverse its way across the network into the real world without any problems.

So anyway, what has most peoples experience been with this router/modem combination.

Why not just use a decent modem such as a DV120 in bridge mode and keep the Airport?

sbiddle: Why not just use a decent modem such as a DV120 in bridge mode and keep the Airport?

I've used a Draytek Vigor 130 but the problem is what it kept disconnecting from my Airport Extreme Base Station all the time (I think it kept on spontaneously rebooting) and even when it worked pages would consistent stall when loading etc.. I used to have a Pace 5542 modem in bridge mode (with the latest firmware on the Pace) but I experienced constant stalling, pages would stop loading etc. so I'm wondering whether there is an issue with the Airport Extreme PPPoE implementation because if I just use the Airport Extreme Base Station in bridge modem (it is basically an access point) then everything works ok other than the issue of upnp/NAT-pmp working properly.

Edit: I'd go for the 120 but I need VDSL2 support hence going with the 130 is the only option other than getting an 'all in one' - I'd go with the 130 but given how unreliable the last time I had one I've decided giving it a second chance.

Haven't used one personally, but wasn't the early firmware for the 130 pretty buggy, and that has now been resolved?

Not too sure but I originally purchased it on 15 Oct 2013 and I returned it within around a week because I was so frustrated with it not working as it should have. It still doesn't really address the problem with the Airport Extreme when using the PPPoE causing pages not to load, constant stalling and buffering of videos etc.

Sounds like you had a DV130 when they were little buggy. If you don't want one of those buy a Zyxel. They're basically the same price.

Unless of course you want to actually replace the Airport entirely..

That's the other part of the equation; basically it is cable central and I'd like to replace the mess of cables with an 'all in one' solution which avoids it all.

Btw, do you have a link to the Zyxel VDSL modem you're referring to?

Cyril is most likely referring to the Zyxel P870H-51a v2 which can be purchased from Ascent.

The 802.11n or the 802.11ac airport extreme base station?

The Vigor 130 arrived and unlike last time everything is working well.

Only downside, when I setup the Vigor 130 in bridge mode and I try to use Transmission Bit torrent client it says that the port is closed where as if I set up my airport extreme in bridge mode then the port is open. Is there a configuration setting I need to take into account when setting up the Vigor 130 in bridge mode?
