I would like to know if there is a bluetooth chat program that could be used in my office to run under WINDOWS XP. I know there are programs for Pocket PC, but I want to be able to send notes or chat with people down the hall who have laptops with bluetooth.

We currently are working on location in the country and do not have a network set up. Can I set up with bluetooth or with my wireless connection?

Any help with this would really be appreciated.

Have a look at BuZZone. They have versions for Pocket PC and Windows. We have a review of the Pocket PC version.

You can have chat and forums with this software. Quite impressive.

No, the Pocket PC version won't run on the Windows desktop/laptop, but they have a full Windows version available for download.

I downloaded full version and tried to install but got a message WIDCOMM software not installed. I am using a Sony Vaio Z1 and it has it's own bluetooth software (NE I think) I don't want to screw things up by installing the other software. Can I use both of them or will this cause a conflict?

By the way, thanks for taking the time to help with this.

In this case it won't work. The software is written for the Widcomm stack. Although possible, installing the Widcomm software on your Vaio will cause some problems if not done properly.

OK, I am very very flustered by this product (BuzZone PPC version). I am in nursing school, and I and my class mates have tried to install the product, it seems very impressive, and exactly what we need for colaboration with in our clinical nursing sites. HOWEVER.... upon download of the program, it will NOT install onto our PPC's. And YES we all have compatible devices, according to the specs, it states that this program is compatible for the HP IPAQrx3115. I have searched the web for other chat programs for bluetooth, and this one seems to be the most popular, but WE must ask the burning question, how do you SUCCESSFULLY INSTALL and run this program???? I have e-mailed the developers for tech support from every single web site tht I find the download for this porgram and have still never herd one word from them. I have even tried to download the program from several diff. sites thinkin of the possibilities of a corupt file from a bad source. PLEASE HELP US!!!!!!

~~Continuing on my rant with the BuzZone PPC program, let me also point out that I did check with HP, personally, and they verified that the iPaq rx3115 does infact have the WiDcomm Drivers for the Blue tooth!!

Have you installed the program on your Pocket PC yet?

I assume you're using the free version. If this is the case, the downloaded .zip file contains a .cab file. Copy this .cab file to \My documents on your Pocket PC. Open the File Explorer and tap the file. This will install the program.

Now, if you've done this and the program is not installing, it could be because of the Bluetooth software version. The Widcomm software on hx4700, h6365, rx3710 is of a newer version than the software used on h3970, h5450, h4150 and h4350. This could be the reason why the program is not installing.

Let me know if you have installed the program using the steps I've described here.

I have used BuZZone before, and it worked fine for me - but on my h4150 and h3970.

yes, i am using the free version first for trial purposes, If it is all it seems to be, then I intend to purchase the full version! I did infact copy the install file onto the PPC, but not into the MY DOC file as you ask, I copied it into my SD card, then opend the "set up" file from there, and it seemed to open and install ok, but once it was done, the set up file vanished, and then when i went into the Programs file to open and run the program, i had basically "DUMMY" icons, they were non functional. and I would get an error message telling me that not all files were located to run this program. I tried the same technique as well fromt he Ipaq file, and receive the same results. I also tried to copy staight into the "PROGRAMS" FILE, but that would not execute at all!! Additionally, I would like to thankyou VERY much on behalf of my self and my class mates for your prompt responses!!!!! Most impressive!!

Lets see, Now when you say copy to MY DOCUMENTS in the PPC, do I copy into the file on my desk top that is "Pocket_PC My Documents" OR copy directly into the "MY DOCUMENTS"
folder directly on the iPaq via "Explore" thru the Sync window?
Were your H series newer or older than the rx3115. See because I would think that the widcomm could be a possibility, however their home site for BuzZone, shows that it is compatible with the rx3115.

No problems, thanks for the praise.

Perhaps copying the .cab file to your SD card caused the problem. I've had a case where trying to install a program to the SD card failed and a few registry keys were pointing to the wrong location, causing failed installs.

First, soft reset your Pocket PC. Put it in the cradle, open ActiveSync and check that the program is in the Add/Remove list. If it is, try removing it using this tool.

Next, trying to install the program it in the right location. There's a small program called "CABINSTALL". Find it through Google and install on your Pocket PC. Then copy the BuZZone .cab file (not the .exe!) to your \My Documents folder

Create a folder \Program Files\Buzzone and start CABINSTALL. Select the BuZZone .cab file and the folder. CABINSTALL will install the files in the selected location.

This should do the trick, but can't guarantee. Let's see the results.

Copy to \My Documents can be either way... If you copy to the folder on the desktop, the file will be transferred to your Pocket PC next time it's in the cradle. Or copying directly using File Explorer will give the same result.

*UGH* Well, ....... NOW, I did as you said, first I copied the unzipped file of the BuZZone Setup.CAB into My Documents right onto the PPC. then tried to execute it, and the error message I received was " There is no application associated with "BuZZonesetup.CAB", Run the application first, then open this file from within the application."
Then secondly I tried unzipping the CAB file on my desk top, and then copying the "SET UP" file over into MY DOC. folder on the PPC, and again, this time it appears to execute ok, I even have icons for BuZZone Photo, and BuZZone Greeting, and BuZZone Notifier. However once going to the Programs menu to run the program, the error message I get as I did previously is " Cannot find BuZZone (or one of its components), Make sure the path and filename are correct and all the required libraries are available."

Too funny, You replied with more advice as I was replying with my failures, OK, I have your new advice, about the CAB file n such, So, I'm eager to give that all a shot!! However, It's 1 a.m. here, and I've been splitting hairs over this program since I returned home from classes today at 3, so it's been several hours of battle. I plan to come back and attempt refreshed tomorrow. KEEP UR FINGERS CROSSED!!

Hmmm... Nope, you didn't do as I wrote. I'll copy it again here:

  • First, soft reset your Pocket PC. Put it in the cradle, open ActiveSync and check that the program is in the Add/Remove list. If it is, try removing it using this tool.

  • There's a small program called "CABINSTALL". This program is available here. Download it and install on your Pocket PC.

  • Copy the BuZZone .cab file (not the .exe!) to your \My Documents folder

  • Create a folder \Program Files\Buzzone

  • Start the CABINSTALL program installed before. Select the BuZZone .cab file and the folder just created. CABINSTALL will install the files in the selected location.
