Hi guys

My in-laws have a Motorola SB5101 cable modem with Vodafone and since we're borrowing their house while ours gets EQC repairs, I was hoping to set up wifi.

The wifi router I have is a Linksys X2000 (got it for $20 off trademe, so perhaps I was asking for trouble).

I've used the installation disk and followed the instructions with no luck I can connect to the router, but no internet.

I've done a lot of searching and reading and have tried various methods of changing IP addresses, MAC addresses etc.

Does anyone have any thoughts?

And is this info of any help?:

The X2000 is an ADSL2+ modem router - how have you physically connected it to the cable modem?

Hi. I tried connecting it via an Ethernet cable to the blue 'cable' port. Another website suggested plugging it into one of the Ethernet ports so the router would run more like a switch. I tried this also, but with no luck.

You have to configure router's WAN interface with Vodafone public ip etc.

I tried the "setup as router only" option on the installation CD but had no luck with that.
Seemed to work ok but I got the "no internet access" message.

The important part is you need to manually need to configure the wan side with a static ip provided by vodafone

Ok thanks for that. Think I'll put it in the too hard basket and stick with 2degrees mobile data instead!

It's not particularly difficult, but it does require some familiarity with networking. It'd be difficult to write down all the steps, I could probably muddle through but not enough to tell anyone how.

You should be able to get it done, but the comments above could use a bit more explanation - I probably can't give you all you need. Basically you need to turn off the ADSL bits (or ignore them) and set up a static IP on the router side of things. I suspect you have to plug into one of the four regular ethernet ports, not any special ones that are different colors. With that and the info above hopefully you can work it out, but I'm sure myself and others can help some more.

Screenshots of router control panel could be helpful if you get stuck.

I managed to get WIRED internet working through the router by running a cable from the modem to an Ethernet port and another cable from a second Ethernet port to the computer. Would this suggest that it's something to do with the wireless settings?

That depends, was this computer working before but just plugged directly into the modem?

if you go into the computer's network settings (network Card) and copy IP addresses into the router's WAN.
Vodafone's Cable use static IP addresses, so you need this in the router to work.

suggest you write down the details on the PC or screen shot, as if you click dhcp and you save you will loose these details.

screen shot could help in advising you what to do where.
