Has anyone tried virtualising gargoyle router (or openwrt?)

Between versions there's not often an upgrade path.  So I'd like to install to a VM, make all my changes so I can export the settings.

Then after upgrading my wr1043nd restore the settings from the VM version - which hopefully will be device agnostic - and should just be gargoyle version specific.

They talk of building it yourself, or some precompiled images, but the images don't seem to exist - and building myself is about my paygrade.

Maybe you could install RouterOS for x86 machines. Then from that you can create virtual routers.

Would be a pretty round-about sort of way to do it but I guess it would work. Enough to test with anyway.

Only thing would be you would need to license RouterOS.

Running the x86 architecture version of gargoyle or openWRT in a vm like virtualbox, is reasonably easy.
However I doubt settings used in a x86 architecture settup, could be restored to a AR71xx architecture device like the WR1043nd router.
I don't know of any way to run a AR71xx image in a vurtual inviroment.

Wouldn't the ports opened, qos classes, static ip addresses type settings be transferable?

I was in same dilemma sometime back. I bought another used 1043ND off TradeMe, used it for testing live while keeping my previous version on standby, in case I had to go back to it. After 2 weeks soak, upgraded the other one, and kept it as spare. I rotate between the two for every upgarde.

Cheers.

Might work.

I use to run Gargoyle in a VirtualBox VM way back when Gargoyle was at version 1.4.x
So over the weekend I tried setting up a VirtualBox VM using the latest 1.6.1 x86 img file downloaded from the gargoyle web site.
It didn’t work.
Looks like the default compiler options they are now using use require the CPU to have 3DNow Extensions. God knows why.

So to get the latest version of Gargoyle running in a VM, It looks like it will have to be a custom build.
