Hi,

I have just bought two bluetooth dongles (Synergy21)with the software “My bluetooth places”, version 1.3.5, to connect my laptop and my desktop pc over a bluetooth connecetion. Using my desktop computer’s DSL network connection works fine with my laptop, besides one point:

Some web-pages cannot be loaded on my laptop (client), but others work fine. I believe this occurs when I try to load “dynamic” pages (e.g. e-bay etc.). When I try to load those pages on the desktop computer (server), everything works fine.

Does anybody know what I can do, so that I can load all the web pages on my laptop computer?

I would very much appreciate your help.

P.S: I use Windows XP as OPS.

It might be something related to ICS? I know that ICS does not allow some port forwarding, for instance you can't use VPN features on a computer connected to an ICS adapter.

If you plug the second computer into the DSL router, does it load the pages ok?

Yes, when I plug the notebook to the DSL connection, I can load every page.

It only doesn't work on my laptop when I want to use my desktop computer as a server for the internet connection...

From your note, since some pages load, I'd say it must be a problem with ICS, not Bluetooth. I only had this with VPN and some games...

I have a similar situation as you, in that I have purchased two Bluetooth dongles to connect my notebook and desktop.

Unlike you, I cannot get my notebook to link up so that I can use my cable modem attached to my desktop.

You appeared to have had little problem. Where did you get your setup details from? Could you share it with me. I am having a hell of a time trying to get it going.

You could look in our guides on how to create the LAN connection for the iPAQ... The configuration on the server side (the computer connected to your cable modem or ADSL or LAN) is the same as the articles.

On the client side you should only have to open Bluetooth places, find the icon for the server computer, right-click and select "Connect to Network Access".

If you have tried this before, let me know...

I have tried it. I do get a successful Network Access connection. I then start my IE on the client, but it will not load a page. It acts as if it is offline. I change to online, but it does not connect.

I must have an incorrect setting somewhere, or am doing something else wrong.

Hmmmm. You have the devices paired, the service is configured and you can successfully connect. If you can connect, then your ICS should be ok.

Are you able to ping one machine to another? If yes, are you able to ping anything outside your network, by name or by IP? If you can't ping by IP, I'd remember you to put the DNS address in your virtual Bluetooth adapter, server side. It happens that a DNS is not visible because of different subnet and ICS not always hand out a valid DNS address.

Do you have a personal firewall running in any of these machines?

Unfortunately, some of what you are saying is over my head - I don't fully understand what you mean.

What address should I put in the DNS? And elsewhere?

I have Sygate Personal Firewall running, but can disable it if necessary.

DNS is the server that will translate a domain name into number... If you enter www.geekzone.co.nz in a program, it'll ask a DNS server to translate this into the real IP address, so it can find it on the internet.

Your computer probably gets the address from the network, but does not give this to the second computer (client). If you don't give access to a DNS server or do not configure one the PC will not find things.

To find if your PC has a DNS or not, on the client machine click Start, Run and type CMD. Press enter and type ipconfig /all and you'll see the configuration.

You can then enter PING www.yahoo.com or any other address. If you receive a message with the IP address and a REPLY then your PC is fine. If not, then you need to define the DNS server.

Using the information from the ipconfig /all, on the server side you right-click the Bluetooth LAN adapter (Network configuration), select TCP/IP and click the Configure button. You'll see the DNS input boxes there.

OK, typing ipconfig /all on the client side (notebook) reveals:

Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection 2

Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
Description : Bluetooth LAN Access Server Driver
Physical Address : 00-80-C8-26-FB-75
DHCP Enabled : No
IP Address : 192.168.0.1
Subnet Mask : 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway :
DNS Servers :

I input the IP address and Subnet Mask into my server side TCP/IP properties, the connect (successfully) by initiating a connect from the client.

I still cannot ping, and IE won't connect.

Ok, so you don't have DNS or gateway entries on the laptop.

One thing is not clear from your post... Have you entered the DNS data into the Bluetooth SERVER side? That's where you want it to be.

If you've done that, the next step is then completely disable your firewall. It might be stoping routing traffic from one subnet to the other.

I have entered the following data into the DNS Server side

Preferred DNS Server 192.168.0.1
Alternate DNS Server 192.168.0.1

I have disabled the Firewall

Still no success.

Well, it appears that I have solved the problem.

I must say that while I am sure that all the assistance was given with the best of intentions, the major problem was that it went over my head. While I do have some experience with standalone PCs and the internet as a researcher, I have had little experience with TCP/IP and networks etc.

By trial and error I managed to stumble on the correct combination of IP and DNS addresses.

I will put up my solution in due course.
