First time here (sorry for that tile ;) ).

I've been beating my head against a wall (it seems) for some time as I've been trying to get my PDA to synch to my laptop over BT.

System:
Toshiba A10
WinXP Home
Windows Intellimouse Explorer for BT
Palm T3

Mouse works fine over BT, and T3 can find the Toshiba, and set up a trusted relationship. But in no way can I seem to get the synch to work, or a LAN connection. I've gone through procedures that I found on several sites, but no joy. I found this note on this site:

"The Microsoft Bluetooth stack do not support LAN Access or Serial profiles"

Does this mean that I'm simply SOL because of the MS BT equipment?

If so, it sounds like the SP2 upgrade WOULD allow a connection? Is this my only software option? I've read through the SP2 forum @ Microsoft, and the discussions don't inspire a lot of confidence in how straightforward it will be. I'd be willing to give it a go if the installation is GENERALLY successfull, but not if it is generally a NIGHTMARE.

Here is the description how it works. Please let me know if you encountered any problems by following the instruction step by step. If it was OK then I will ask the Toshiba BT team if they can host it as howto on their webpage. Here it is:

PC:
TOSHIBA Satellite 5100 with internal Bluetooth
TOSHIBA Bluetooth Stack v3.00.31a
Windows XP Home (TM)
PDA:
TUNGSTEN T3 with Palm OS
HotSync (R) Manager v4.1.0

PC:
===
- Install the HotSync software.
- Start the HotSync Manager
- Click with the right-mouse-button on the HotSync-icon in the system-tray-bar and select "Local Serial"
- Click with the right-mouse-button on the HotSync-icon in the system-tray-bar and select "Setup..."
Click on the "Local" tab and set
Serial port = "COM7"
Speed = "38400"
Confirm the settings by clicking on the "OK"-button.

PALM PDA:
=========
- Click on the Bluetooth-icon in the system-tray-bar
- Click on "Prefs" and select the following settings:
Bluetooth = ON
Discoverable = Yes
Connectable = Yes
Confirm the settings by clicking on the "Done" button
- Click on the house-icon in the system-tray-bar
- Start "HotSync" by clicking on the according icon
Click on the "Local" button
Click on the "HotSync" button on the top of the window and select "Connection Setup..."
Click on the "New..." button and select the following settings:
Name: BT-Sync-PC
Connect to: PC
Via: Bluetooth
Device: 'Click on this button to search your PC and select it from the list'
Confirm all by clicking on the "OK"- and then "Done"-button
Select your new profile "BT-Sync-PC" under the "HotSync"-button in the middle of the screen.
Now click on this "HotSync"-button to start the syncronization
"Identifying user" appears

PC:
===
- The HotSync window appears
Select the suitable user.
The syncronization should start.

This example will not work for the problem because the user is running the Windows Bluetooth stack bundled with the BT mouse. For this to work the user has to install the Windows XP Service Pack 2. Also the example say COM7, but this port will be different depending on the hardware configuration.

For a guide on how to configure the Windows XP SP2 Bluetooth check this Bluetooth Guide, replcing references to ActiveSync with Hotsync.

He owns a Toshiba Notebook so also the Tosihba Bluetooth stack is installed by default. Also an upgrade to SP2 does not switch to the MS-stack. It will work if he follows the description.
If he wants to use the MS-stack via SP2 then you are right. He has to use a BT-stack switch tool first. The way to do it is in this case similar. The most important thing is in this case, as you already mentioned, to use the suitable COM-port, which MS uses.

One additional remark to the Intelli Mouse software: I am also using a MS Bluetooth mouse in combination with the Toshiba Bluetooth Stack. First I have setup the MS-mouse with the Toshiba BT-stack and then installed the MS Intelli-Mouse software. So I can use all functions of the BT mouse without the need to install the MS-stack.

Thanks for the info guys. I just installed the SP2 update and I'm in the middle of my first BT synch right now..... pretty slow compared to USB, but no wires :)

One point of clarification on the preceeding discussion. My Toshiba laptop does not have BT built-in, and I was using the MS BT adapter that came with the MS mouse. Even after insalling the BT mouse and getting it to work correctly there was no indication whatsoever about any BT stuff in Device manager. Only upon installing SP2 did the BT stuff show up in device manager, thus allowing me to configure the virtual com port. To me this suggests that there was no Toshiba BT stack installed by default, but maybe I was looking in the wrong place?

Check the windows Programs folder "Toshiba" and "Bluetooth" to make it sure

Don, he's using the Microsoft Bluetooth adapter that comes with the MS Mouse and Keyboard. The Toshiba stack will not be on that laptop...

To clearify this, he should check his program folder. As already mentioned Toshiba notebooks, which do not have bluetooth inside, but can be equipped with it have normally the Bluetooth Stack installed to make the upgrade easy.

Hi Don,
I think Freitasm is correct. I checked for any likely folders, based on your suggestion, and I come up with the following:

c:\Toshiba\
c:\Toshiba\Video
and...
c:\Program files\Tosihba
c:\Program files\Tosihba\ConfigFree
c:\Program files\Tosihba\TOSHIBA Console
c:\Program files\Tosihba\Toshiba Tbiosdrv Driver
c:\Program files\Tosihba\TouchED
c:\Program files\Tosihba\Windows Utilities
c:\Program files\Tosihba\Windows Utilities\SVPWTool

Those are the complete folder structures for "C:\Toshiba" and "C:\Program files\Toshiba", and I can't find ANYTHING in any of those folders that look anything like bluetooth stuff. Not a single filename containing the text "BT" or "blue". So it looks like nothing was installed by default.

But, like I said previously, SP2 has solved the problem for me.

So in your case the notebook can not be upgraded with an internal BT card so no BT-stack is preinstalled. That was to clarify. Thanks.
