Hi,

I have a iPAQ 5450 with Wireless network card. I recently purchased a wireless accesspoint. Everything work very well, but I have discovered that I cannot stream files from the other compueters. I have to download the file (music, document etc) to my iPAQ and then run it from there. Is there a setting that I have overlooked or do I need special software to make this happen?

Thanks, and have a nice day.

Imran

You might want to copy this link to your PPC, or just click on it mms://198.165.13.51/VOCM to test your LAN. This should play VOCM radio on your PC or your PPC. Sometimes you may get an error message that they ran out of connections, but most of the time you should be able to connect.

I'm not real sure what you are trying to do. To stream you need some type of server software that selects the music, and pumps it out. But if you just want to be able to listen to music on your PPC, all you may need is some better networking music for your PPC.

Take a look at the free program http://www.bizzdev.com/en/downloads/netuse/ The link seems to be broken today, may check it tomorrow.

Another program you could try is Resco Explorer http://www.resco-net.com/explorer.asp

Another thing is "What kind of streaming"? If you want to play your mp3 you can setup the Microsoft Media Encoder to run alongside your Windows Media Player... And then use the Pocket PC Windows Media to open a URL (http://) and it'll play the song or video. The problem is that you have no control on content from your PPC.

www.40th.com has a product to stream mp3, and you can control the player - skip songs, pause, etc.

Otherwise, if you're looking into opening remote files, follow David's suggestions...

Dear friends,

Thank you for the answers.
I see that I have not articulated my question clear enough; therefore I make an attempt again. From my PPC, I can (through wireless accesspoint) access my PC’s. Both PC’s are running Windows 2000. I can log on to these PC's with username and password and thereafter access the shared resources. Among the shared resources, I have music. When I tap a music file from my PPC (which is on the PC), the PPC does not play the file. I have to download it tp PPC in order to play it.
Now, when I am using my (main) PC, I can access me fileserver and play music and videos directly from the server. I am trying to implement this feature into PPC so I can make a playlist on the remote computer and play it directly from the file server.

Again, thank you for your help.
Imran

Ok, this is then back to my first reply to this post... The PPC will only play a music file from a file server after downloading it.

To have it streamed to your PPC you'll need either 40th or Windows Media Encoder.

I'll publish some instructions on this during this week then.

Ciao!

With reference to the above discussion, I would like to post another question.

I have (from the advise given above) installed Explorer 2003 from Resco. Together with an 3Com wireless access point, I can now access shared resources on all the computers in the network (Thanx for the link David).

Following is the question. When I copy an example mp3 file, which in this case is on 5194.82 KB, it takes 43 seconds for the transfer from a shared resource on a network computer to the main memory of iPAQ. The music file has a playing time on 5 minutes and 32 seconds. If I run the file directly from the shared resource, the songs stops after some seconds and the “Windows Media Player” says it is buffering. After some seconds, it plays a small piece for then to buffer again. Is there a setting that needs to be refined or is “Windows Media Player” itself the reason for this? If not, does someone have any idea or advise?

Thanks for your help.

Have you tried doing real streaming? I mean install the Windows Media Encoder, configure it and play from the Media Player (opening a URL)?
...
Just tried this again, and I think the Encoder v.7 doesn't like WMP 9 on the desktop. And the new encoder is not compatible with WMP 8 on the Pocket PC. Oh, well...
