HI,

In this config here: LAN

I've been having problems with the machine label GB-PVR.  It seems to get fairly frequent disconnects on the network.

Today I installed some pinging software on another machine that will email me when the gbpvr machine goes down....in an hour it s gone down about 5 times.  For a couple of minutes at a time.

Now stupidly, I had put down all the windows updates that I was missing, and I somehow think this has caused it.

Can anyone give me some advice as to what I should look for?

Some details.

ASUS M2V Mobo
AMD AM2 3600+ Dual Core CPU
1 Gb Ram
200 Gb Hard Drive
400 Gb Hard Drive
A bunch of TV Tuners.

Only seems to be the network affected (proven by ping the machine every 10 seconds and and seeing it go down).

I can't see anything in the event log - but occasionally there's a dhcp error but when this machine goes down, it goes for a couple of minutes.

I've just updated the network drivers, but only to the microsoft ones (dev manager, update driver) not "official ones".

Any ideas will be appreciated!!

first off try a new cable from the router to the pc.

is it happening under high load or just anytime/ is the router rebooting itself and making the pc lose connection? the router could be faulty.

Also if you have a spare nic card try that in the pc.

Flamer.

Does seem to be under load causing the problem - but we're only talking about 15 - 20% here

Last night I stuck a second nic on the machine and ran them both.  When it failed, saw that both of them were down (pinging both)

I've just gone back with the system restore to where I knew I had put down a heap of windows update patches.  I think this is my last option before i rebuild.

Stupidly I did have images on the machine from just before I put hose patches down, but got rid of them (DOH!!!)

i don't think this is a software issue. have you got another computer you can plug in, see if it drops out at the same time..

The main nic causing a problem is onboard. Or are you thinking that I should be checking the state of the router it's connected to??

I tried that the first day, had 3 or 4 pings going and the machine wasn't responding but the router was...

Ok so the router must be fine, under advanced options of the nic cards have you got power management disabled (ie. so the pc doesn't power down the cards when they are idle)

also do you get the bubble pop up and say "connection to lan lost" when the link drops?

you can try download the latest drivers for your nic card from the manufacturers website (not ms update)

Flamer.

I thought of the power management as well.  I think I've got that off, will look at it some more.

And as far as I know, i don't get the lost connection bubble....bit difficult to tell since I only ever connect via vnc or rdp.

And yeah tried the LAN drviers as well.  Its a bugger of a problem that's been dogging me for two weeks.....
