Hi all Im wondering if WPS is different from wi fi. A friend has just got a new wifi router and my samsung phone finds the network but wont let me connect to it. My phone is an ace 2 so quite modern. So it made me wonder if they are 2 different types of signals. thank in advance.

WPS is a feature in some routers that makes it easier to join a network by pushing a button as part of the process.

Nothing to do with being allowed or not to join the network. I'd say that either your device is imported (and use a couple of different bands so you need to adjust), or the WiFi access point is running in 5GHz only and your device supports only 2.4GHz (I am not sure, didn't check the specs on your device), or the WiFi access point is running in a mode that only allows certain MAC addresses to connect.

Or simply sometimes an AP has problems with specific devices.

Actually the solution was so simple. I just had to push the WPS button on the router while connecting my phone. I havent had any experience with WPS before so Ive learnt something today. The spark manual that came with the router didnt say you had to push the WPS button everytime you want to connect a new device to it.

You shouldn't need to. Once connected your device should do it automatically. Also you could connect if you used the WiFi password as WHS is actually something I recommend keeping off.
