Hi everyone - newbie here and hoping for help.

We have just had fibre Internet installed through chorus/spark. I have realized (now) that the modem/router supplied by spark is not going to cut the mustard as far as service delivery.....it doesn't have an extended range as needed and even drops the wireless when the device is about 1 metre or less from the router yet the hard wired laptop works well in the same place :/

I have found out that essentially the ONT is the modem and I only need to purchase a good router.

1. I am after some recommendations of good, easy to install router giving good coverage for teenagers and family running multiple devices in home. A lot of what I am reading is that some of the setups can be difficult, depending on brand, to complete and helplines can be minimal. I am hoping for one I can plug in and connect without too much stress.

Or

2. Could I possibly use the existing Belkin modem router (model F703402v1) I have been using for ADSL and set it up as a router for fibre? Or even a booster if I need to purchase another router? This brand has been great for the last few years and I haven't had any issues with it.

Thinking the best thing overall may also be to cat5 (yes have been reading a little) to the main laptops/pcs used but would still like good wifi.

Thanks in advance :)

If the Wifi on the Belkin Router meets your needs. Then disable Wifi on the telecom router. Disable DHCP on the Belkin router. And then plug a network cable between the LAN ports on both routers. Yes there are some things that might stop this from working. But try the above first.

I've got a ASUS RT-AC68U which is awesome. Setup was really easy - it's just a router so you need to bridge it to your Spark modem, which saves you having to worry about getting the connection settings right for the ISP. I've found the speed and range excellent. One of the good things is that you can set up about 6 "guest" networks on which you can set time limits, and you can run them at either 2.4 or 5 Ghz - from memory you can have up to 3 of each. Good for kids that won't get off the internet! Each has its own password, so you can turn theirs off without affecting yours, if needed. I've put my AppleTV on a 5Ghz one to avoid interference from all the other devices when I'm streaming Netflix or Hulu.
