Some friends are closing their house for 6 weeks and have asked what they should do about their VDSL modem. In the past, if leaving the house empty for that length of time I have unplugged all electrical items apart from, of course, fridge and freezer; however, I am uncertain if there would be any impact on subsequent connectivity if the VDSL modem was disconnected for that length of time. They are unconcerned about disconnection of their VOIP via ATA connection as the providers voicemail and phone app will take care of any local calls.

Advice would be welcome.

Nah go for your life.

We've had clients close offices and remove all equipment but forget to cancel their phone and broadband accounts. The supplier will happily keep charging and keeping the port live at the exchange.

At a guess, there is a chance that the equipment might go through a retraining period where speeds/profiles are auto-negotiated but that would have only a minor impact on speed for a few days while the automatic testing takes place. Perhaps check the speeds before disconnecting and again after reconnecting.

I would power off the modem for that length of time

Friends did a trial and shut-down the modem for a one week absence. Speed test immediately after powering up again showed speed of 39 Mb/s which was in the normal ball park. All tests a day later and up to present time, however, gave a speed of around 21 Mb/s. Unfortunately, the ASUS DSL-N66U does not reveal the DLM regime and have not been able to determine the appropriate command through telnet access. Hopefully, DLM will sort it and return connection to pre-break speed.
