Time for me to ask for help again please. I have a Netgear WNDR3700v2 wireless router attached to my Draytek modem and I've installed Gargoyle. I really like gargoye because of the traffic management features - I can give each device its own access times/limits and limit upload / download useage etc.

So my problem is the Netgear router has died. Totally dead - some power issue. Blew a couple of wall warts before the router itself died.

So whats my solution. Do I try to find another WNDR3700. Or do I find another router that is supports Gargoyle. Or is there some other router / software that I can use instead and still manage device in the house.

Any ideas welcome.

Edit: Seems liek a TP-Link TL-WR1043ND v2 is available locally.

Thanks Delphinus. I can figure out how to get Gargoyle onto a router  - just. That solution looks way too complicated. I think I need something simplar

Took the plunge. Got me a TP Link Archer 5 AC1200. Gargoyle flashed in no time. Now in the process of setting up the connection limits for all the devices around home. So far speed sems better than the WNDR I had previously and soooo much beter than the Telcom Modem / Router I've been using as a back up. Actually, straight out of the box this is was one easy router to set up.

Yeah Gargoyle is way better than the default firmware on retail/consumer routers.

One thing I didn't realise is I've lost the 5ghz band. Not too much of a problem as I'm not swamped by 2.4G neighbours and 5g didn't travel too far anyway.

thank god for easter. Put the dead router into my crypt of other dead stuff but thought I might pull it to pieces to see what is inside.

Spied a wee hole labelled "reset" and Lo and behold it has come back to life again.

Dang, now I have two routers with gargoyle. Now maybe time to see if I can connect the two.

But how did a lockup burn up the power supplies??

no idea. I've tried the power supplies on other boxes and they are definitely dead. Maybe it is a coincidental fault in power supplies that caused the lock up. It may be there was some electrical spike. I have loads of heavy construction machineas around At the moment and have gremlins in my modem and home security system. Diggers have dug up a few power cables and I've had spark out who have fixed several breaks in the telecom wire. I know my sewers are still broken so I suspect there is perhaps some unseen underground or in house faults

I would have thought the fact that you are being affected by neighbours 2.4 band, would be the reason that you would want to move as much to 5.0 as possible.  i.e. for now at least, it won't be clashing with much else.  Same would go for AC when you start getting clients that support it.

I have the wndr3700 v2 with Gargoyle and all works fine for me.

Possibly the reason you are losing 5.0 GHz with the new router, is that it has the newer AC band, which isn't supported by Gargoyle yet.

you are onto it. The new router is a tp link ac 1200. No gargoyle for the 5g band so hopefully it will come. Not sure that it will - I recall reading something about the 5g part of the chipset wasn't open source. So I'm using that router at the back of the house where I have found neighbours using three channels - I don't pick up strong signals but strong enough that I can sign into their accounts and watch you tube. I'm also using ethernet on a laptop that is used for games so that helps spread the load

Front of the house is different - different neighbours but still using a few channels. Too far away for the back neighbours. This is where I have set up the net gear router, on a seperate 2.4 channel and with the 5g

So you're using one router as the main router/wireless AP and the second just as an AP or repeater?  If so, why don't you have the WNDR3700 as the main router with Gargoyle on it, but keep the stock firmware on the new TP-LINK? That way you can still use the dual band (and AC) on it?

In my opinion, the main benefit of Gargoyle is the 'routing' functionality, like QoS etc.  I wouldn't have thought there'd be much benefit of having it on an AP or repeater - specially if you have to sacrifice the 5.0 GHz band for it.

yes the tp lInk ac1200 and its running gatgoyle. i did set it up with all the dhcp clients before i resurrected the netgear

yes the previously dead net gear with gargoyle already on it.

Good thoughts!. I guess I didn't want to go back through resetting all the dhcp'so. But maybe I should invest the time. And yes I would get another 5g back. Though I do find the 5th range isn't far. Seems to work best in a straight line with no walls - is this correct?

Can I re flash the tp link back to stock?

The newer bands have successively more through put, but less range.  That's good, cos it also means less interference from neighbours etc, but ultimately means you need more APs.  I think that looks like the way forward.  i.e. more APs spread around you house with much higher bandwidth.  Since you've got two decent dual band routers, you can start going down that path already.

I wouldn't think it's too hard to re-flash the stock firmware.  Probably just follow the manufacturers procedure for updating firmware.

Well I tried but can't find a ac1200 factory file to reset back to. So I've swapped routers over in the hope one day gargoyle has a version which uses 5g and ill be ready to flash from there.
