So I live in an apartment and I've subscribed to an ADSL line, which was turned on today, but when I got home to try it my download speeds are terrible, as seen by the speed test shown below.




But when I look at the routers sync information, it looks like it's syncing at good speeds no?
I'm assuming that's bytes, so convert that to megabytes, makes it 1.2MB/s or am I doing this wrong.



I got this Vigor 120 back in 2013, and haven't used it for about 6 months, but I kinda remember it being a bit flaking just before I moved house last year, but forget the exact issues.

This modem is still under warranty (yay for Ascent) so was wondering if I should try get it replaced.

Note: I've contacted the ISP as this is a new connection, but after they reset something it didn't help so they're going to get Chrous to check something tomorrow, but I don't want to get to the stage where they check my line up here, only to find it's fine, and it's my hardware, and get charged a massive call out fee.

Also I have no ADSL filter, this isn't needed for a nakid no phone setup right?

I would assume the sync speed is 1.2Mbps (small b), which would make it consistent with the speedtest you're getting. This kind of horrible speed happens all the time in apartments, you can't get fibre?

You're misreading the sync stats. Based on those sync stats above, your speeds are perfect.

You will need to look at why these are so low, and looking at the wiring and/or installation of a master filter would be the first thing to look at. First step would be to try a new modem and cable.

Ah, thought I might be miss reading it.

There is fibre available at the building, but Chorus still has to install the gear inside the building, which body corporate isn't allowing at this stage :(

I'll pick up a filter and phone cable (and maybe cheap as modem if I find one) and give that a try tonight too, thanks guys!


Oh and I should be able to get at least 14.08 Mb/s as that's what a friend of mine gets here in the same building, just a floor up.

If someone else is getting that then there is a serious defect.  As it is a new connection I would start with your ISP, and mention how someone else is getting a much better connection in the same building.

It could be a lot of different issues.  My personal guess is a cabling issue.

I got speeds like this once in a previous apartment when the tech didn't punch down the pair properly at the MDF. Basically only one of the two wires in the pair was connected, and we were somehow able to get a connection through the crosstalk in the two wires only. Once punched down, the speed jumped 10 fold.

Oh wow ajobbins, sure hope that's not the issue here.

So I went over to PBTech today, got the cheapest router in stock, a TP-LINK TP-W8950N, also bought a new jack to modem phone cable, and filter for the heck of it.
$50 odd less, I arrived home plugged it in, put in my Snap details, and get a super sync rate, pretty much the same as the DrayTek, just a tad slower.
Also tried it with and without the filter, no difference. (this place only has 1 phone line jack, and I've subscribed to the naked broadband plan).

Here are the details from the TP-LINK modem/router.




So I'll relay this all back to the techie who's on this job, which will probably mean calling in Chorus again.

Go see if you can find your MDF and the IDF on your floor and if they are unlocked (many are) and you can identify your pair, check everything is punched down good. How old is the building?

It was built in 2007, the place is like brand new.

I always assumed that it would all be in a locked cabinet in the basement somewhere.

Just a quick update, the Chorus tech came out and it turns out my line was swapped with the neighbors for some reason, so it was put back to the way it should be, and now my speeds are as you'd expect, 10Mbps, which is miles above the 1Mbps I used to get.

So turns out it wasn't anything on my end.
