Hi

I'm about to upgrade my LAN to WiFi (802.11g)
I believe (but am not sure) that I can use a Vodafone U630 3G/GPRS data card to help connect my laptop to the WiFi network.

Is anyone able to confirm this for me?

The Novatel card connects to 3G, which is different from Wi-Fi. Most laptops these days (in the last few years) come with built-in WiFi, which is what you will need to use.

Well!

The online help for the card and it's software has a section on WLAN, which it defines as Wireless Local Area Network and it further states that this is the same as WiFi.

It then goes on to say "The Vodafone Mobile Connect software makes it very quick and simple to connect to any hotspot supporting the Vodafone WLAN service."

I guess the devil is in the words "Vodafone WLAN service"? And that a domestic WLAN or WIFI will NOT be a Vodafone compatible one.

OK - so I need, then, to acquire a PCMCIA wireless network card?

The Vodafone software can manage your buillt-in or other card's connections. It doesn't mean the card comes with Wi-Fi.

If your laptop does not have Wi-Fi you will need a PC Card or USB adapter. However I'd check your laptop's configuration first, it's really unusual for any laptop built in the last three years to not have built-in Wi-Fi.
