Motherboard has died on Win7 machine and replacing it.

It is on a home LAN with 2 XP machines (and a win 8.1 laptop).

I remember it being a nightmare getting the LAN working (file & folder sharing), and I wonder if there's any advice
of what to do to help setting it all up again?

Thanks

Cheers - Kirk

Upgrade your two XP boxes to Win 7 - easier to set up a LAN, with a Windows 10 upgrade option as a bonus.

I presume I've only one licence for one Win7. If i install it onto the XP machines, won't they fail activation ?

You would need to buy two licences for Win 7.

(Home Premium $150 each or Pro $220 each)

You can re-use your existing licence for the broken PC.

If you're saying that insiders will get win10 free, that is 100% false. Its a rumor spread by people who only read half the info.

People running the preview will be upgraded to the RTM, but it will only activate if they have a valid upgradable licence or buy a win 10 licence.
