I got given a free Spark branded Huawei HG659b today. So I tried it out as a Wifi AP. Very pleased with the results.

Speedtest over 5Ghz Wifi from the HG659b.

I now want to get another HG659 to improve coverage. Is there much difference between the Spark HG659 and the HG659b? (business and consumer versions) And the Vodafone version of the HG659? Would it work If I tried to flash the Spark HG659b firmware onto a non b HG659?

Also any idea if the built in Wifi aerials are directional or not? Especially on the 5Ghz.

I have both a 659 and a 659b. The exterior case is different and there may be minor internal hardware differences but they are pretty much the same thing. Firmware is not cross compatible but I haven't noticed any difference in the web interface between the two.

Note that they are both the 'business grade' Spark product, the 659b being slightly newer and branded as Spark, not Huawei. The residential grade product is the 630b, which doesn't have AC wifi or VOIP capability.

I don't know about the wifi antenna.

Edit: The Vodafone 659 is exactly the same hardware as the Spark 659, and you can use Spark firmware on a VF unit.

Sorry, incorrect. Both are white. The 630b is black.
