I see I am not the only one ... sure it is something simple, but I have been unsuccessful in all my attempts to activesync over bluetooth - I hope to use my my laptop (w/ TDK dongle) and ipaq 5455 to active sync over Bluetooth.

I too have tried following David Hettel's note to the letter.

However

- I either get a "device not recognised - retry or disconnect com port" prompt from my laptop when I try

or, if I try initiating from my ipaq then I get the "bluetooth active sync- connecting to host" prompt, but has no impact on the laptop at all

They seem to see eachother perfectly well.

I wonder if it is a problem of ports - the serial ports available for my laptop for the bluetooth dongle under 'local services' (10-19) do not match any of options in the laptop's active sync manager (3 & 9) - (admitedly under 'client applications' it does say that the bluetooth serial port is also com port 9' - matching the active sync chosen option).

Dont know how this is possible or what my problem is but would value any pointers.

Kind regards

Rob

A couple of things... Your first ActiveSync operations must be through the USB, and then you can do it over IR, LAN or Bluetooth.

Second, make sure the ActiveSync is configured to "Always sync while the device is connected" or "Only upon connection".

Third, you have to start the ActiveSync from the Bluetooth Manager...

Give it a try?

Ok for activesync, you want the COM port listed under Client Applications. This is what you would set Activesync to. And you must start Activesync from the Bluetooth manager icon, on the hp545X. You might also want to double click on the Client Applications | Bluetooth Serial Port and make sure that the Startup Automatically is checked. Another thing to check is did you create the connection on the 5455 using the Activesync option in the bluetooth manager program? A bluetooth serial port, is not the same as a bluetooth Activesync port on the 5455.

You can do the initial or first sync with Bluetooth, if you use the Bluetooth Activesync option. This is how I sync my machines. It will create a partnership. It is treated as a serial connection.

Timing comes into play with this to, you need to click on the pop-ups as soon as they appear. If you take to long, it can time out. I generally check the always allow option when it ask.

Thank you both very much for your efforts. Sorry to say that either it didn't solve my problem or I am not following it correctly, as my problem persists.
- I have a PC on which I regularly active sync (so I dont think I have any 'first' active sync problems).
- ActiveSync is configured for 'continuously whilst device is connected'
- as per below, I have tried (what I think to be the correct way of) active synbcing form the bluetooth manager
- The client apps comp port and the active sync com port do match
- If i double clikc on 'Client Applications | Bluetooth Serial Port', I do not get a box that refers to 'Startup Automatically'
- As per below, I do not get any pop ups on my laptop when I try ti initiate it from my ipaq.
I am obviously very frustrated having invested in the bluetooth card for precisely this purpose. I hope I am not taking liberties but would value any further help you can offer, in an attempt to be comprehensive, I have listed below my full set up relevant to bluetooth active syncing.

This is my set up:-
On my Ipaq (5455) I have created, what I think are activesync partnerships, using the bluetooth manager - certainly I have the icon in my 'bluetooth shortcuts" folder, with the 'activesync' icon superimposed (which I assume means that it is set up for bluetooth active sync-ing). The laptop also correctly appears as a paired item in 'paired items'
- when I right click on the laptop-sync icon in the bluetooth manager/shortcuts, and hit 'connect'' I then get the prompt 'bluetooth active sync/connectng to host' - but it stays up for a while and then seems to time out, but without actually syncing or indeed any impact on my laptop
- when I hit 'sync' from within the activesync manager (with bluetooth enabled), I get a 'connecting' prompt, and even a 'synchronise with pc, last sync: todays date/time', but again without actually syncing or any impact on my laptop.

(other setting on my ipaq are in the active sync manger: 'enable sync when cradled using' (usb default & its checked), 'include pc when syncing remotely and connect to' (name of my laptop & its checked), and in the bluetooth settings: just the enable service boxes are checked, and com ports 5 & 8 for inbound/outbound

On my laptop (w/ bt, tdk dongle) I
- My bluetooth folder can see my ipaq and appears to be paired with it fine. The subfolders are Public Folder, Inbox & Generic Serial (nothing else, dont know if there should be for active syncing)
- I can access the 'public folder' which is on my ipaq, over bluetooth without any problems (which I assume means both bt receiver/transmitters are fine) (and maybe that the serial connection (?) works fine?)
- the Generic Serial icon shows 'not connected' - if I try to 'connect to bluetooth serial port' then it says 'connected to com9' but almost immediately says 'microsoft activesync does not recognise the device that it is trying to connect to 'retry or disconnect com port'.

(other settings on my laptop are: in the bluetooth manager under client applications the com port for 'bluetooth serial port' is 9, and under local services its 10, and in the active sync manager, all four boxes are checked, the com port is also 9, and all of the com port, usb and network say available)

Thank you again both for any help you can offer me on this.
Rob

In case it helps anyone - the problem has been solved - it was a problem of comports. I swapped the com ports on the bluetooth manager (between the one used for the client applications and the one used for local services) and now it works just fine.

Hi Bobby, I also have sync problems. I have now tried three different Bluetooth USB Dongles and I cannot get it to work with any of them.

You wrote that you changed the com ports on the Bluetooth manager. Was this on the iPaq or on the PC. If on the iPaq I cannot see how to change it. If on the PC I am restricted to which com ports I can use and none of the available ones are the same as the ones on the iPaq.

Regards,

Johnny B

You don't have to change ports on the iPAQ. Change the port on ActiveSync (right-click the ActiveSync icon in the System Tray) to match the SERVER port in your Bluetooth configuration in the desktop/laptop.

This was driving me nuts for ages. I dont know if its going to help anyone but all i did was untick "Allow USB Connection with Desktop" option in ActiveSync Connection settings and thats it...worked like a dream.

go figure....this is the opposite to what it says in the guide on this site

cheers
