Why? Surely one or the other should be fine, however if I turn off wifi I get no internet.

Ethernet is plugged in and shows as green on Network Diagnostics.

Is your Ethernet perhaps on a static IP or configured without a gateway?

Most likely to be an issue with the ethernet connection.

Are there any other computers on ethernet also having issues?

Few things to try first with wifi off

Check it is not a DNS issue.
Open terminal(Applications -> Utilities -> Terminal)(You can also use network utility but this is now hidden)
ping -c 3 google.com
ping -c 3 58.28.64.27

Let us know the outcome of the above.
