From the bluetooth proximity part of this conversation, if I plug a bluetooth USB dongle into a 12v Cigarette socket USB charger like this, will the dongle power up and make its mac address visible? (I dont need it to do anything else but show its mac address to other BT devices that are searching).

probably not, my experience with USB bluetooth is that they need a host/driver to handle MAC, although the MAC address is stored in ((EE or mask??)) ROM the driver handles communications, they are radio-modems mostly it's the driver implementing alot of the spec.

still, let us know if it works!

I was just gifted a bluetooth mobile phone to achieve the same thing. But I might try it out of sheer curiosity...
