If I run Speedtest on my iPhone 6 Plus when wifi is on, I get a ping of about 300 and down speed of 0.44Mbps.

If I run it with 3G I get a ping of 48 and 23 Mbps.

The router is a VF unit, the ethernet speed is (today) ping 31 down speed 26 up speed 2.99.

The wifi unit is a new Apple Timecapsule connected by ethernet to the router.

Is the wifi speed normal or very slow?

How far away from the unit? How much interference around? Can you run a scanner and see if changing channels would help?

With a similar setup I get full speed (105 down/20 up) on the Speedtest app (iPhone 6 connecting to wifi on the latest model Airport Extreme, located in the next room)

How many networks can you currently see?,
what channels are they on?
Are you running 2.4 or 5 GhZ?,?

there is no normal speed for wifi

as for your speed test, thats awfully slow

The pathetic speed is either due to one or a combination of

- Bad router
- Bad Wi-Fi module on said device
- Something preventing Wi-Fi talking to the two of them, most commonly are distance, and interference

Without knowing much about your house plan, stand right next to the Wi-Fi router and turn off everything within a 10m radius from you two. Check the speed. Then by introducing stuff and distance repeatedly test your speed until you figure out the reasons for your problem.

I spent some time fettling with it last night.

I found a way to solve the problem.

Rather oddly, the 5ghz channel seems not to do anything unless you give it a separate name. I had (logically) assumed that in a dual band unit, the network "My Network" would be broadcast on both frequencies.

Oh no.

You have to name the 5ghz channel separately or it seems not to exist. As soon as I did that and specifically told the phone to use that network, the speeds went through the roof!

Ping 32, Down speed 25.02, Up speed 3.48.

Both will exist with the same name but the 2.4 seems to generally get picked up as a stronger signal even if there is more interference. Seperate names is the way to go.

I have my 2.4GHz and 5GHz networks on the same name with another virtual SSID for 5GHz so clients connected to my main network (Space Cat) can get 5GHz or 2.4GHz and clients connected to my other network (Space Cat 5GHz) can only see 5GHz.

Works well and gives the best of both worlds. I find clients often connect to 5GHz however have had problems with some devices (my Chromebook and phone) preferring 2.4GHz over 5GHz.

2 iPhones and one Mac Mini. My iMac is on ethernet.

No not really. I can't check the other phone until Er Indoors returns from Auckland at the end of the week though.
