Hi

I am trying to connect my new Linksys Router XAC1200 to my Spark UFB after recently purchasing at from my local Harvey Norman shop, after I had seen it advertised in the latest catalogue on special, and with how it was Fibre ready. When I was in the store I double checked with the man, and he confined that yes, it did work with fibre.

However when connecting it up, following the instructions that were on the Spark 3rd Party Modems webpage, it did not connect to the fibre internet. Is someone able to help me figure out what I have done wrong?

Does it support VLAN tagging?

A quick look online shows no mention of this device supporting VLAN tagging. If it doesn't support this, it's not going to work with Spark (or any other UFB provider that uses VLAN tagging).

Yeah, can't find anything in the user guide or in the web UI to configure VLAN tagging. Might be some third-party firmware that will allow it, but I haven't tried it on these. I would swap it for something that does what you need.

Also what is VLAN Tagging? Never heard of it before and maybe good if I know what the feature is when I'm looking for it.

what do you want/need in a ROUTER? whats wrong with the one they give you?

there are no modems in the fibre world

We just got connected to Spark fibre at home and the HG630b works great

UFB connections from the majority of ISPs require a VLAN tag of 10 to be set on the WAN port so that you can have access to the CIR on your connection with appropriately tagged traffic. With no VLAN your connection is just an EIR and all traffic is best effort.

Yes return it for a refund. If they refuse tell them that they have misrepresented it by saying that it will work on fibre internet. When Spark, Vodafone, Orcon, Slingshot, 2deg [Snap], Trustpower All require VLAN tagging. So most of the ISP market in NZ (by market share).

And if they have simply read the spec's from the side of the box. Tell them that is not your problem. And that they can claim back their costs from their supplier.

Device support for tagged WAN interfaces is often not marketed, at best hidden in the technical specifications and features list. In the retail market I'm only aware of two brands D-Link and Netcomm Wireless who print brochures and packaging with a 'NBN ready' label for the Aus/NZ market.

Although pretty much all ISPs who provision tagged connections supply routers to go with their service.

It is possible to put your Linksys behind the Spark supplied Huawei, not an all-in-one solution you may be wanting but here's the tutorial anyway:
