Hello, can someone please explain the difference between 'whois' and 'soa'.
For instance is 'whois' simply a method of polling the information in an 'soa' record ?
...or is 'whois' something extra ?

Thanks kindly.

Whois is the method of finding out largely non-DNS information about the domain, the registrant and registrar, who to contact about the domain.
It also includes the DNS servers.

The SOA (start of authority) contains DNS information such as a contact email for DNS issues, TTLs (such as how long to cache records by default, NXDOMAIN responses etc) and the primary DNS server.
