I have VDSL coming into my existing TG589v which is then plugged into an Apple Airport Extreme.  All my devices connect to the Airport for WiFi and the PS4 is the only thing wired into the TG589vn.

I want to make better use of the gig ports on the aiport though so am thinking of wiring as many things to that as possible, but assume the 100mb ports on the TG589vn  would cause a bottleneck.

I can buy the newer Huawei HG659b (FIBRE/VDSL/ADSL) from Spark but I'd ideally want just a modem/router and let the Airport handle WiFi.

1. Does this sound mad?

2. Any recommendations?

Thanks

:)

100 meg is fast enough for VDSL, so what is the problem you are having?

the TG589 would only cause a bottleneck in any local streaming/file sharing you would be doing, its not likely to hamper your VDSL performance

Dont bother. Spend your money on something else. Even when UFB becomes available (if it ever does) some providers which dont require vlan tagging will allow you to use the air port as your router.

The fastest VDSL lines are going at about 100mbit. So even if you have a perfect line and a broadcom card it wont matter. If you can put the tg589vn in bridge mode, and then do a PPPoE wit hthe Airport and then run everything off the gig ports on the airport extreme then you can have gigabit internally. But I dont know if that modem can do bridge mode. I think it might be able to.

If you ask nicely they may give you a new Huawei HG659 if you sign another 12 month contract (if your not on one). I asked as someone moving to 100mbit fibre however and so the 100mbit ports on my old Technicolour (slightly different model) were a bottleneck and they agreed to this. Your current setup won't be bottlenecked due to the VDSL though so your probably better leaving it as is till you can get fibre then getting an upgrade.
