Hi guys, there is a place where they already have a few extension telephone cables laid out - the ones from DSE / The Warehouse etc.  Is it possible to convert them to RJ45 and use them for computing?

They then can be plugged into the router and the other end plugged into laptops.

100Mbps is fine.

Saves the work of buying new cable and laying them out again. Very old house nearly 100yrs.

Thanks.

Phone cables are very unlikely to be twisted pair, so the chances of getting ethernet to work through them is pretty slim. Might be acceptable over a very short distance, but interference will likely be very high meaning it won't be very reliable.

Ok .... if the telephone cable is pulled out and replaced with Cat5, ethernet is sweet.  If in the future a resident wants a traditional phoneline is it easy to convert this without yanking the cable out again?  Ie - plug one end to a telephone jack and other end to a telephone handset.

Looking at options.

Cheers.

a POTS line can run over cat5 totally fine, its the reverse that isnt as intercompatible Due to the points @RunningMan already made.

Replace with cat5e or cat6 with rj45 sockets. That works for Ethernet and just use rj45-rj11 patch cables for phone
