I've finally installed my new cabinet and I'm now after some short (10-15cm) cat6 patch leads. I usually buy the Dynamix cables from Cables Direct or PBTech but the shortest they seem to do is 25cm. Does anyone know where I can buy shorter cables (preferably in NZ)?

I checked cablesdirect.co.nz but they don't seem to have any that short.

Yer I've found some over in Australia (https://www.qconnect.com.au/_products/CABLES+++ADAPTORS/NETWORK+CABLES/Cat6+Patch+Leads/Cat6+Blue/0+15m+CAT6+UTP+Lead+Blue+-743-86515-.aspx) but I can't find any over here unfortunately. I might have to just order it from over there, I only need about 20 of them which is why I'm trying to avoid overseas shipping charges.

Sounds like you'd be better of buying a cut&crimp tool and making your own to exact preferred size.

Electrical wholesalers have them (edit, 0.25) in stock. Otherwise ask your favourite computer store to get the size you want from computer dynamics.

Should note that those 0.25m patch leads are actually slightly less than that in total and you're not going to want smaller.  Usually by the time you route a patch lead through cable management you don't want them so short.

In your cabinet, switch/cable management/patch should look something like this:

  • Phone Line patches
  • Cable management
  • Wall Patches
  • Cable management
  • Switch Odd
  • Switch Even
  • Cable management
  • Other Equipment
  • Cable management
  • Other Equipment
  • Cable management

Key point to make is that the patch leads in the odd (or top row) ports of the switch go UP through the management unit above the switch and patch leads in the even (or bottom row) go DOWN.  This is so that patch leads don't cover up or cross over a port below it and just looks better.  Do the same for your patch ports so that the leads don't go over the top of your labeling.

I couldn't imagine a need for anything less than 25cm (which is the shortest I've ever seen from any major reseller) - and the only way you'd get something shorter would be to find some slimline cables such as the FS ones.

If you are going to buy cable and make your own as suggested above rmember this needs to be stranded (not solid) cable, and stranded (not solid) connectors.

Not Cat6 but Cat 5e.. so Gigabit is fine.. but not more than that.

10cm.. I purchased 20 of these.. no issues:

10cm is stupidly short though (But worked for my application)..

Just buy a 1m cable and cut it into the length you need. Problem solved! ;)

I got 15cm cables of aliexpress, nice colours too - it's very important for my bits and bytes to look flash as they go past.

I struggled to find anything in NZ so I resorted to Amazon

I bought 50 x 0.5ft (15cm) cat6a cables, and thought finally! What turned up was 50 x 5 ft cables (1.5m).. sigh. They ended up refunding me and told me to keep them

@sbiddle for situations like this:

e.g. 2 x 24 port patch panel with a 48 port switch in the middle of them
