Hi all you knowledgeable geeks.

My desktop computer currently has a talktalk broadband (ethernet)connection using a talktalk modem (SmartAX MT882). Zdnet speed test records my connection speed averages 2.5-3 MB.

I would like to replace the Talktalk modem with an unlocked BT Hub (Inventel model DV4212-BT) to provide a wireless connection to my laptop. The supplier has assured me that the unlocked hub will work with Vista and Talktalk. However, logging on to 192.168.1.1 and following the installation procedure through (using the same Broadband username and Password which were supplied by talktalk and used with the TT modem) I reach a point where I receive confirmation that the configuration was successful following which a synchronisation process runs for a few minutes before the ADSL Status indicated "Link Down".

When I try to connect I receive a message "connecting through WAN MiniPort (PPPOE) fails. Cause could be an invalid value for the service name field for this connection. Update in connection properties."

I also get an 815 error—remote server is not responding.

Checking the configuration details for the BT Hub the Internet protocol is shown as PPPoA (PPP over ATM), Encapsulation VC-MUX, VP 0, VC 38 & mode Permanent [0-1].

I changed the Hub internet protocol to PPPoE (PPP over Ethernet). However, the WAN Miniport (PPPoE) again failed. Note that I am using an ethernet cable to connect.

Other Hub Manager configuration details are as follows:

I would be very grateful if someone with more knowledge than I have could identify why this BT router will not connect to Talktalk broadband.

Thank you

This will appear as a reply to my own previous post. In fact it is an addendum thereto.

Talktalk technical support have advised me that the talktalk broadband connection is PPPoA. The internet protocol of the BT Hub was also set to PPPoA but when I try to connect to the internet I get a message that connectivity through WAN MiniPort (PPPoE) fails. I presume there is a conflict here and if so how can it be resolved?

I note that the TT Modem (SmartAX MT882) encapsulation? is PPPoA. With that Modem I get a very solid connection but I don’t know what MiniPort, if any, that it uses.

miniport is the PPP connection on your windows machine. Delete it. You need to setup the login by entering it into the ADSL router. Nobody cares whether your router or service provider is TT or BT (your computer doesnt even know at all), but the router must be setup with the correct PPPoA type, VPI, VCI, and username/password settings given by your service provider. Enter that into your router, not windows, because windows just connects to the router via Ethernet on a local network. The modem will function as either a router or some kind of bridge.

Thanks for your response. Actually I had given up on the BT Hub and purchased a Belkin ADSL Router which installed easily & is working very well. I have my desktop computer connected by ethernet cable and a wireless connection for my laptop both running on Vista.

I have an older computer (5 or 6 years old) with XPPro operating system. It does not have a network adapter and has no free expansion slots available to fit one. Consequently, I purchased a USB/LAN adapter which was marketed as being the easiest way to connect to the Computer network without opening the cover, adding cards, reconfiguring software or any other technicalities. I don’t need this computer to be connected to my home network so I can use it as a platform on which to endeavour to solve the connection problems with the BT Hub (ie to create a second broadband connection outside my home network)

Connecting up the BT Hub to the USB/LAN adapter (with an ethernet cable) two separate net icons appear on the taskbar one of which has a yellow explanation mark attached. Left clicking on this icon opens "Local Area Connection 3 Status" box. Status is shown as "limited or no connectivity"

Speed 100.0 Mbps Packets sent 655 , received 7. Click on Properties opens the "Local Area Connection 3 Properties" Connection uses DM9601 USB to Fast Ethernet Adapter. The connection uses the following items.(all ticked)

Client Service for NetWare

Client for Microsoft Networks

File and printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks

QoS Packet Schedular

Network Monitor Driver

Network TCP/IP version 6

NWLinkNetBIOS

NWLink IPX/SPX/NetBIOS Compatible Transport Proto…

Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)

If I right click on the desktop taskbar icon and click on "repair" I get message " Windows could not finish repairing the problem because the following action could not be completed : Renewing your IP Address.

The second desktop taskbar icon refers to the 1394 Connection Connected Firewalled 1394 Net Adapter. Its status is shown as connected. Speed 400.0 Mbps. Packets sent and received 0.

The connection uses the following items: (all ticked except the first item)

Client Service for NetWare (unticked)

Client for Microsoft Networks

File and printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks

Network Monitor Driver

Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)

If I right click on the desktop taskbar icon and click on "repair" I get message " Windows could not finish repairing the problem because the following action could not be completed :

TCP/IP is not enabled for this connection. Cannot proceed"

Entering 192.168.1.1 in my web browser should give me access to the configuration menu of BT Hub.

Instead I get a message to say that the "Web page is not available offline"

If I PING 192.168.1.1 I get a message that "the Destination Host is Unavailable"

The Computer does not appear to be in communication with the Router (BT Hub).

I would mention that this ( XPPro) Computer has a dialup connection (via modem) provided by a different service provider. TalkTalk provide my broadband.

There are a number of issues here and any suggestions for a solution would be very welcomed.

Thank you

Limited or no connectivity because no IP address received from BT Hub. Solution: Check that DHCP server in BT Hub is turned on. To do that you'll have to give a static address to Local Area Connection 3.

1394 is firewire so can be ignored.

Spark Max Fibre using Mikrotik CCR1009-8G-1S-1S+, CRS125-24G-1S, Unifi UAP, U6-Pro, UAP-AC-M-Pro, Apple TV 4K (2022), Apple TV 4K (2017), iPad Air 1st gen, iPad Air 4th gen, iPhone 13, SkyNZ3151 (the white box). If it doesn't move then it's data cabled.

Halo Spyware

I would like to try out your suggestion but my knowledge of Computer science is sadly limited and I would welcome a little more help please.

How do I determine the static address I should give to Local Area Connection3 ?.

Where/how do I enter the static address?

When I was trying to install the BT Hub on my vista computer (now running happily with a Belkin router) I was able to access the Hubs configuration settings, and, unless these have changed when I moved to another Computer, the DHPC server is turned on ( see my initial post #19800 (1/03/08))

Many Thanks for your help.

Nothing is going to work without TCP/IP functioning on your computer, something wrong there. I would also give up on the hub, it sounds like its not compatible with the broadband here and you have already solved the problem.

Ta Webwat---But I am still curious to know why the BT Hub will not work on my XPPro Computer using a USB LAN connection.

Incidentally when I connect the USB/LAN adapter to an ethernet port on the Talktalk modem (SmartAX MT882), which I had been using before replacing it with the Belkin router, I am still unable to connect to the internet. All I can get is a Local Area Connection. There is something wrong somewhere.

Regards
