Hello.

As the title suggests I have a brother MFC-J265W printer and a spark HG630b modem/router. According to the routers user manual I should be able to connect a usb printer to the router. However following the instructions it never finds the printer.

Anyone had this problem?

MFC's usually will not work over USB on routers and stuff, only print only devices.

If you are lucky you might get the printing part working, which would be thru the windows add printer wizard, not the brother software.

Add printer, choose network and see if it finds it.

If not, add printer, choose local, choose add port and put the routers IP address in and see if that finds it.

Correct Madengineer.

The router does not see the printer and I'm not sure how to find the printers ip address. In the printers menu there is no ip address allocated under the network settings. Do I have to manually give it an ip address?

If the device is connected over USB, it will not have an IP address. The fact that you have the option on the printer means it is a network printer so should either be on wifi or connected to an ethernet port of the router if it has got ethernet on the printer.

The printer does not have an Ethernet port and it is wireless capable but its too far from the wireless router.( i don't use the wireless on the HH630b I have another wireless router elsewhere in the house and I dont want to bridge them as everyones wireless connections get flaky when bridged).

I can connect printer to my pc and the family can print to it from their machines but only if my pc is on, hence the need to connect it to the HB630b usb port so my pc doesn't have to be all the time.

turn wireless on for the huawei but give it a different ssid perhaps? Then the printer can go on that and everything else will ignore it.

The USB connection doesn't need an IP. The router acts as a USB/IP Print server.

Except they only do that for USB devices that are the right types, and most MFCs are at best able to show as a composite device so the printing part will give basic functionality, and in most cases show as a device that is specific to its own software and port installation carryon so no standard print server will do anything with it.

Good idea but not sure if thats going to work. Wont users have to disconnect from one wifi to connect to other wifi just to print? Also not everyone has wifi connections.

Well if the wifi on the huawai isnt already on the same netwrok as the other then they wouldnt be able to print to the printer on the huawai either, so long as the other device isnt doing nat between its wifi users and the huawai then it should all be on the one lan anyway.

Follow the instructions there, along with the setup of the driver.

Sounds like he wasn't able to resolve it either.
