I have fibre newly installed, and am currently connected with a basic router supplied by Slingshot.  I want to use my DSL-AC68U to handle as much as possible.  I understand that a firmware update in March makes VLAN tagging possible with the DSL-AC68U.  Would appreciate advice:

a) Can I cut the Slingshot modem out altogether and plug by AC68U directly into the ONT?  If so, what do I need to consider in configuring the AC68U?

b) If not, has anyone got the (new) Slingshot fibre modem to pair with an AC68U?  What are the key steps?

Thanks for your help,

Matthew

I believe Slingshot use PPPoE on VLAN 10 for their UFB connections. You'd need to plug your router into the ONT via its WAN/Internet port, and set it to connect on PPPoE with your username/password, and VLAN 10 tagging enabled.

Whether or not your router will allow this, I can't say for certain as I don't have one. The user manual on the Asus website doesn't reveal much. The older Asus combo modem/routers only supported VLAN tagging on the DSL port, but not on the WAN port.

For point 1, having read through the change log on firmware updates from the Asus website, it sounds like this should be doable. Look for VLAN or 802.1Q options for the WAN port. It might be listed under IPTV. VLAN ID or 802.1Q should be set to 10. Priority or 802.1p should be set to 0. Posting some screenshots of the user interface would help so people can give you a better idea on where to look/what to change.

For point 2, you could either daisy chain the Asus off of the Slingshot provided router via its WAN port set to DHCP (will result in double NAT), or you can disable the DHCP server on the Asus, and connect two LAN ports between the Slingshot router and the Asus. Neither of these solutions is ideal. Try to get the Asus doing everything, and removing the Slingshot router entirely.

This is very helpful; thanks.  Will attempt and report, with screenshots, if stuck.
