I am a NAS enthusiast/fanatic.

I already have too many Synology NAS units - 2-bay, 5-bay, and 8-bay - all filled with WD Red drives.

I have a spare new 8TB Red HDD, and would like to put it to use in a single-bay enclosure - to store hi-res music files.

Redundancy is not important. No transcoding or encryption is required.

The obvious candidates are the Synology DS116, the QNAP TS112P, or the QNAP TS131 (all are probably over-kill )

Does anyone have any experience with these units?

Any other suggestions? (must be able to cope with 8TB)

Other suggestions... stop hoarding and start deleting stuff, if you have that much stuff stored already! ;)

Remove one of the I assume much smaller drives in the other NAS and replace it with the 8TB one....

True Confessions:

All of the HDDs are 8TB - purchased in bulk - therefore the spare one

Meh I went away from this very thing since I have a fast internet connection.

Photo / Video Backups: Stored on Google Drive.
Music: Google Play Music (uploaded my music library + use their service for all other music which is very comparable to FLAC quality).
Video: Nutflux, Amazon TV, Lightbox and this other dodgy bit of software I won't name around here with an obsession with Popcorn.
Other Storage: Each device has at the minimum a 256GiB SSD otherwise I have a 4TiB external drive connected to a single board computer (Orange Pi) for the times I need bulk storage.

Other things to take into consideration is if your house burns down, if your drives fail etc do you have a complete backup stored? No, not talking local backup (taken from experience from the Christchurch earthquake where both of my important backups were in different buildings, but both drive arrays experienced drive shock with the earthquake).

Ouch! Food for thought. I live on a fault line.

I thought that triple redundancy and two locations was enough - obviously not.

Maybe I should buy some more hard drives ...

UPDATE

I have found a home for my orphaned 8TB Red HDD.

Instead of spending money on yet another NAS unit (I already have 6 of them), I decided to repurpose an old-but-good (vintage 2010) USB 3.0 external hard drive enclosure.
The SAMSUNG STORY Station 3.0 2TB USB 3.0 is a well built unit with a well-ventilated (fanless) metal case and an external power supply.
It was easy to remove the old 2TB Samsung HDD and replace it with the 8TB Red (on rubber mounts).
The Red runs cool and quiet.

So now I have an 8TB USB3 drive.
