Hi

I've got a Spark router in my house that keeps falling over, I spoke to a guy who does networks for a big organisation and he said to try pass-through, as he explained it, I should set the default gateway route on my devices to the Spark gateway that the Spark router connects to.

Making this more complicated, I live in a house divided in to 4 units, 1 unit has fibre and controls the Spark router, so I can't change any settings on it.

I've got a wired connection to it and I use a Nighthawk for my own wireless and LAN. The Nighthawk is connected to the Spark router via the WAN port, effectively my Nighthawk router thinks the Spark router is the Internet. The guy who signed the contract with Spark isn't keen to try a different setup.

I tried setting a laptop of mine to use 125.238.72.1 as the gateway, but I think I should change the netmask also?

I'm a bit confused, I want to try bypass the Spark router because it can't handle the load. Is this possible somehow?

Cheers

Not really possible to bypass the Spark router.

The answer is to ask the person with the router to sort out why it's falling over. At a guess, someone is torrenting the poor thing to death.

Sounds like they are doing a TOS breech with spark if they are onselling it like that.

You are not going to do anything by setting your gateway to the other side of the spark router. It is doing NAT. I would hope someone doing networks for a large organization would know better.

I think we will see more of this. Giving people gigabit will encourage mini ISP's, that's why I think gigabit should be priced much higher than what it is.

exactly this. sounds like a case of simply expecting too much of a RWG.

would not surprise me if its a lower end upstream plan which would be morelikely to congest too.

I expect to simply see the TOS enforced alot more...

hmm TOS. Well, 1 house, 4 units, 6 people, the size of a family, ultra fibre 200. I did ask Spark to install the ONT box in the hallway and to wire up my unit too, but they said no.

If they did I would be on my own plan by now.

They put the ONT box in another unit's bedroom. That's a bit silly on their part.

I think ISPs don't need to worry too much, in high density buildings like mine wireless is useless, I can't get a good signal from the floor below, so we literally had to run a wire. Wires are difficult to run between properties and so on, as long as they keep prices decent and are willing to install the link/connection in a sensible way.

There are many many many wireless networks crossing in to my property and only AC is useful within 2 rooms that belong to me.

Interesting point though.

Jesus H Cheeeriiiiiiiiiist.... "does networks for a big organisation" my backside. That advice is just technically not possible, and even someone with basic network knowledge would know that. I would stop taking advice from that guy.

Presumably the Spark router i right next to the ONT? So if you have a wired connection to the Spark router it could quite easily be plugged straight in to the ONT. So why not just go ahead and get your own connection on port 2 of the ONT anyway?
