Hi,

I've just upgraded to Vodafone's FibreX Max connection and I'm seeing speeds of 800-900 Mbps Down, 80-90 Mbps Up on a PC connected via Ethernet. With the Xbox One also connected via Ethernet, I'm seeing dramatically slower speeds. From a max of 150 Mbps down, 5 Mbps Up to as low as 25 Mbps Down, 2.5 Mbps Up? I contacted Xbox support, they suggested that possibly Vodafone has port restrictions in place on the router limiting the speeds. He indicated that Xbox puts no limits on download or upload speeds. I then contacted VF and they advised no such port restrictions are in place. Basically, they pointed fingers at each other saying it was the other parties issue. I'm wondering if there are some settings in the Huwaei HG659 that require adjusting to optimize speeds on the Xbox? The VF tech just directed me to a Port Forwarding website which was no help.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated

Cheers,

Config:

Cable modem - TC4400 connected to Huwaei HG659, then PC and Xbox connected to routers WLAN ports. Other devices connected wirelessly.

But where is the Xbox content hosted? I am sure it will not be New Zealand

Depending on the game I will get up to 180mb/s.

If the game is older (I'm guessing not cached by my ISP or Microsoft, in Aus / NZ) I'll get around 20mb/s.

I have also tried Port Forwards vs no Port Forwards, and didn't see any speed difference on the Xbox One.

I'm on Gigabit Fibre, with bigpipe. Thought the info may be a useful comparison.

Hi Linux,

Thanks for your response. That's a good question, I'm just running the Detailed Network Statistics test from the Xbox Network Settings menu. Not sure where it's getting the results from? But what is strange, is that when I was on my crappy VDSL connection, the PC and Xbox results were much closer. If I was getting 20 Mbps on the PC, I would get 15-18 Mbps on the Xbox. I can certainly accept a drop in speed, but from 800-900 down to 25?

Cheers,

Is it possible you're using Megabits on the Speedtest & MegaBytes on the actual downloads?

With your Megabits divide by 8, to get your MegaBytes persecond. :)

Thanks migrif

As indicated,  I'm just running the Detailed Network Statistics test from the Xbox Network Settings menu. Not playing any game at the time.  Pretty sure both Speedtest.net and the Xbox are reporting in Mbps.

It's the xbox and where its downloading from and their CDN,. If you google the issue, you will see many other users globally complain about the same issue especially when it comes to download speed when you buy a game, its even more apparent since their latest update as you can see the speed more clearly.. Its been the same for a few years, and now even when i have fibre i still get poor results compared to my connection, sometimes rebooting the console will help, it wont be the Fibre X connection. I get great results downloading from Steam, or Blizzard, its just the Xbox thats inconsistent. They have said they are making improvements to this all the time, and they have been pretty true to their word in the past.

Thanks keepitwarm,

It's interesting that the speeds vary so greatly. From 150 Mbps down and 5 Mbps Up to as little as 25 Mbps and 2 mbps. And this is just running the Network Test, not downloading or playing any game. You'd think if it was pinging the same server for results, even if located in the USA or CAN the speeds would be more consistent?

as your dealing with an international link, the variance in tests would be far higher - Latency is a major player in speed, You are going a long way for some of those tests.

If i recall correctly, the xbox system does not do threading in the speedtest, where as speedtest.net will. Also as previously mentioned location is key, Ultimately you can compare the two..

As for comparing your VDSL to Cable results, Vodafone use different networks there, They can't be directly compared. More than likely you are hitting a different test server on the xbox.

Thanks hio77,

So bottom line is there's nothing I can do to improve the Xbox network speed? It hasn't caused a gaming performance issue as yet. At least my Son hasn't yelled at me to stop streaming a movie like he did regularly on the VDSL connection!

Simply put, its a nullissue. Locally you will likely have a better experience - Depending on DLM profile you had on VDSL, your latency could be higher or lower though.

Faster conections man benifit is, you can multitask without issues of bandwidth congestion.

As to the preformance of the connection itself, YMMV but over here is a large discussion about it http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=40&topicid=204855

Some good stuff, some bad stuff. Vodafone appear to be in the process of resolving the bad stuff so i wouldnt worry too much about it. Could be worth a read though?

I just let my games download overnight, or buy a digital download key during the day, plug it into xbox.com and the game is normally downloaded by the time I get home.

This was probably more for the Gaming thread, however it follows on the conversation here, an update will be rolling out to all, which contains the following update to the Xbox one. Be great to see it in action.

OS version: 10.0.14393.2152 (rs1_xbox_rel_1610 161208-1218) fre

Release date: 12/14/2016

Performance and general improvements

Download performance

We’ve made several optimizations to game and app downloads on Xbox One:

  •

Customers with high-speed connections (greater than 100Mbps) should experience up to 80% faster download speeds.

  •

Customers with connections less than 100Mbps should experience more consistent performance that is up to 40% faster than before.

  •

Additional optimizations have also made background downloads more resilient to intermittent connectivity issues.

Download speeds will be influenced by network contention within the home and at the ISP level. Download speeds will also be impacted when games are running on the console as system resources are prioritized for gameplay over background downloads. For more information, visit Troubleshoot slow game or app downloads on Xbox One.

Wireless controller

  • Firmware update to improve performance.

Background Music

  • General performance improvements for added reliability and consistent experiences across steaming music apps.

Miscellaneous

  • General stability and performance improvements.
