Having a look at this for someone. Old house nearly over 100yrs old, brown old timber that can be hard to pentrate thru with wireless. Looking at adding a unit upstairs while running a network cable. Those are better I heard than wireless to wireless.

1. This RJ45 port. Is it for incoming data from the router? Or can you use it for outgoing - ie the unit connects wireless to the router and someone can plug their laptop into the RJ45 port.

2. We are looking for an economic N300 one, any reason to go with a AC version? They pretty much just use it to surf the web, watch videos etc and use chat apps.

3. Do extenders use the same SSID or create a new one?

Looking at placing the device right outside the 4 bedroom doors in the corridor. If that does not cut then nothing I will I guess unless you put it each of the bedrooms.

You probably don't want a WiFi extender, you probably want a second access point (I use a different SSID) fed using RJ45 or power over ethernet. There are dozens of threads on GZ about this topic.

Yes there are some APs and some wireless extenders are 2 in 1 (not all). The more expensive ones allows a network cable between the device and the main router. The more cheaper ones tend to be only wireless (router to AP or extender what they call themselves) with the RJ45 port to the laptop only ie - you cannot run a network cable upstairs.

I have put a couple of this type of cheapie into an old workplace and they worked great as AP's - only one of the RJ45s would get bridged back to the network, the other did nothing when acting as an AP.

Wasnt from that seller, so you are best to check if they are giving you a real AU plug or something else with a dodgey travel adapter.

You want a wifi extender with Access Point mode.

Almost all belkin routers have this mode and you can pick them up for about $80-$120 at noels or harveys
