what effect does dhcp lease renewal have on open connections? Is it nothing at all, or do they get dropped and have to re-connect? or something in between?

All going to plan, assuming the DHCP server authorises continued use of the same IP address, it should normally have no effect.

I have run a 600 second lease in the past here, and it was all just fine, had ssh sessions to raspberry pis on wifi open for weeks without any dropouts.

DHCP client bugs in early android versions. Kit kat. Sometimes doesn't renew, or will renew with new IP and then keeps using old IP. Fine on a home network where the router always assigns the same IP. But causes conflicts on public wifi.

A friend's ISP-provided router (I don't know the model) would renew DHCP every 60 minutes by default and would disconnect his PC in the process. That's certainly not the norm, but just be aware that some devices may do it!
