Hi everyone.

I have two issues that I hope someone can help me with .

1. I have just purchased a new Computer from computer lounge. Finally come back to PC after all these years. It has come with Windows 10. I am hard connected to my Modem/router (Netgear Nighthawk D7000)

Sadly with the windows firewall on, I am getting 1 Mbps down, and 0.4 up.

With the firewall disabled I get 5 Mbps down, and 0.8 Up.

2. Vodafone, if anyone is out there, I have just upgraded to VDSL from ADSL. I am pretty far from the exchange and I am guessing this is why I am getting such slow speeds. I do tend to average 10-12 Mbps down, and 2 Up. (When I was on ADSL it was 3 down and 0.25 up) I am guessing that the slower speed is just for this time of the day( in regards to above point 1.). My question to Vodafone is - any chance that you will be upgrading where I live, you quote average speeds 15-50 depending on location and I don't achieve that :(

Any help with windows ten would be appreciated. I am saving for VR headset now so online play is important to me.

Firstly, I would have put this in the Vodafone thread.

Secondly, anyone commenting will want you to show the modem stats. These are connection speeds and line attenuation stats from the modem.

The VDSL is on Chorus network, not Vodafone. So the question you should be asking is that will Chorus upgrade the VDSL.

The answer is yes, there's a upgrade in progress for Chorus VDSL, it should be complete by start of next month.

Before we talk about that, let's ask you the basic questions first, are you connecting to WiFi or ethernet? Did you leave a download going (eg Windows Update)?

OK team. Yes I just about double posted it to Vodafone as well. Good to hear Chorus are updating.

So I think I have done some investigations and *maybe* worked it out. Still confuses me though.

Win 10, all drivers etc all new and updated. I'm connected to the router from the PC via Ethernet cable.

I'm confident now that it is a windows thing and not a router/firewall/setting issue. It was windows reserving bandwidth for downloads. For example, right now if i do a speed test i get a good ping and download/upload speeds of my normal average (12 down, 2 up) If I open Uplay (I got one of those free games on redemption with my graphics card) and start downloading the game- the game downloads at 1.5mbps and then if i run a speed test the internet itself is limited to 2 down, 1 up. If I close U play, speed tests immediately runs back to normal figures.

I have done some research and turned off the peer to peer uploading that windows does automatically, apparently I can do more than that as well to stop windows 10 reserving 20-80% of bandwidth but I'm hesitant to do anything about it yet.

Interesting - sorry for the n00b question, like I said, I'm just back to PC for the first time in about 12 years so forgive me for being a little unsure of what I'm doing. I know just enough to be dangerous!

Windows isn't your problem. It doesn't ration out bandwidth as you are suggesting. If it did, I am sure I would have noticed and seen it talked of in forums.

You still haven't posted the most important info from the modem as mentioned in my earlier post. This is vital info and no one can go any further to help without knowing the basic line stats.

Can you confirm you have the units correct? The capital letters are important. There's a big difference between Mbps and MBps.

You're still doing it wrong.

I believe what you're meaning to say is a 44GB (capital B) download will take 8 hours, this converts to 1.5MBps (capital B again).

The conversion rate is 1B = 8b. In other words, the download speed is 12Mbps and your download speed matches the line rate.

Without providing your modem xDSL sync stats there is absolutely nothing anybody on here can do to help you or offer any advice.

that would be MB/s or MBps if it were 1.5Mbps it would take 8x as long as you are suggesting.

your not bothering us but when we ask for troubleshooting information to help you with your issue its generally because its important, to help trouble shoot your issue.

the other thing is it makes a huge difference in the units your using as to the results you are seeing. as said one using is 8x larger than the other.

you need to log into your modem to find the line stats, should be a vdsl/xdsl connection page which will have your connection speed, attenuation SNR and a few other things on it.

Well, what does tell us, pretty obvious .
Google search "uplay p2p" .
Get rid of it . Thats where I would start, decrapify the PC .

ANY download is dependent on the speed that server at the other end can allocate to you.
Lots of downloads from that server : it might slow down.
Lots of downloads never get near our internet connect speed .
