Hi everyone,

I have an external hard drive which, whenever I need to access it, is connected via USB to my wireless router modem. Now since I have the NF4V Netcomm Router I cannot access my storage device. The Windows 10 network diagnose/troubleshooter says:

Windows can't communicate with the device or resource (192.168.1.1)
It is available but is not responding to connection attempts. A firewall or network security policy on the remote computer might be blocking the connection on port "file and print sharing resource".

- In the NF4V settings it says that my LAN side firewall is disabled.
- Windows side Firewall enabled/disabled did not make any difference.

Does anybody have an idea why Windows can't access my router via the network. I can connect to the router via browser just fine.

Using a router as centralised storage is typically the worst approach in the world due to incredibly poor throughput and very limited capabilities. What format is the drive in? Most only support FAT or FAT32 drives.

I had the same problem with the NF4V, but emailed NetComm (they were excellent to deal with) and they gave me a solution that worked.

The solution is:

Login to Router
Navigate to Management > Access Control > Services Control, tick Enable for SAMBA for LAN column and click Apply/Save.. Reboot the modem.

Note: Speed through put seems ok, product does support DLNA. I have copied a 20meg mp4 (video) in a couple of seconds to a USB HD in the modem and it played back from the modem USB perfectly.
Note: Also seems to run FAT32 and NTFS drive sweet as.
