I Have just had a fiber connection set up and am using the modem/router that my ISP provided. I was enjoying a new life of high-speed internet access until I found out that my ISP has me locked out of the router. Actually, I'm still enjoying the fast speeds, but it's really annoying that I can't get into the router and configure things the way I need, like assigning static IP addresses to my devices or setting up port forwarding.

I called my ISP and explained what I wanted to do but their policy will not permit me to have administrator access to the router. Before I go out and buy myself a modem/router that I can configure the way I want, I'm wondering if i could/should take an alternative approach. I was wondering if doing a factory reset on the router would allow me to get into the administration console using the default username and password?

If this did work, would my ISP recognize the mac address on the router and lock me out again? If my IP would recognize the mac address, could I get around this by spoofing the mac address on the router, if it supports mac spoofing that is?

I don't want to step on anyone's toes or be a nuisance to my ISP, but it would be a waste to leave this nice Netcomm NFV4 modem/router sitting around.

If you factory reset it one of two things will happen - 1) they use TR-069 for provisioning and everything will come back exactly the same when it provisions itself or 2) You'll have nothing as the device is factory reset and you don't know any of the settings to configure your connection again.

Change to a decent ISP

I'm a geek, a gamer, a dad, a Quic user, and an IT Professional. I have a full rack home lab, size 15 feet, an epic beard and Asperger's. I'm a bit of a Cypherpunk, who believes information wants to be free and the Net interprets censorship as damage and routes around it. If you use my Quic signup you can also use the code R570394EKGIZ8 for free setup.

Just to add too that I'm guessing your ISP is probably NOW, so you can't get up port forwarding anyway since they use CG-NAT.

As for setting up static IP's you do this in the device anyway not the router so it's just a matter of asking what the DHCP scope is and picking something outside that to avoid a clash.
