Just wondering if anyone is able to help.

I have fibre installed, with Vodafone NZ, and have a HG639 Router.
The HG659 is connected to the fibre termination point, through a RED WAN Cable.
This is provided by Vodafone, and the writing on the RED WAN Cable notes (CAT 5e UTP ....)
These are the same words written on a YELLOW LAN Cable, also provided.

Ive got another HG659, and I am wanting to purchase another cable to get internet to this second modem/router.
The RED cable used in modem 1 works on modem 2, as it should.
The yellow cord does not work. I have also tried various CAT5e cable's, and a CAT6 cable.
All options have not been able to provide internet over the WAN Port.

Vodafone have told me I can use a CAT5e cable from a store, but this does not work.
Does anyone have a link to a specific cable I can purchase, or who I am best to contact.
My only other solution has been to buy another HG659 from trademe, just for the RED WAN Cable.

Thanks

simplest option is to disable DHCP on the second router then plug the yellow cable from the first modem into the second modems lan1 port and it will share the internet from the first modem over wifi and the 3 remaining lan ports.

Yes, any Cat5 or Cat6 cable will work, but not in the WAN port of the second device.

Here is my current settings for modem1 & modem2. Both are Vodafone HG659's.

DNS of modem 2 is off, but am able to access login of modem 2 when hardwired to modem 1.
modem 2 does not provide internet access yet though.

What do i need to do with the IP Addresses?

Define "modem 2 does not provide internet access yet though" exactly how you you think that modem 2 will provide Internet access given when both devices are connected by LAN interfaces (layer 2 switches) that no routing is being performed by modem 2 (I wish you would call it a router).

Hi, yes I am wanting to use router two as an extender.
Internet via ethernet from router 1 to router 2, then using internet over WiFi from router 2.

How can i achieve this?

OK, explain what happens when you connect to wireless of modem 2. Does wireless connect?, is an IP address assigned by modem 1 DHCP server??, what exactly is the IP address, gateway and dns on the client devices wifi interface???

One problem is that the IP address (manually assigned) of router 2 is within the DHCP range of router 1 - so you may end up with two devices with the same IP address.  You should change the start address of router 1's DHCP range to (eg) 192.168.1.12

This may not be the cause of your problem, but it's not good

the IP address of router 2 will be the same as that of router 1

you need to connect router 2 directly to a PC and set it to DHCP.

then turn off that routers DHCP server. connect the routers lan port to the lan port of router 1.

Modem login page and modem lights showed no internet access, so I didn't bother to refresh and try load something, on my phone and laptop that was connected to modem 2 over WiFi.

Went to load my browser and it loaded Google.
Now its working.

How could that possibly work?  How can two devices on the same subnet have the same IP address - you'd never be able to manage them both separately.

Here's a simple guide to setting up a spare router as an AP: (the missing step is to exclude router B's IP address from router 1's DHCP range)

https://www.cnet.com/how-to/how-to-turn-an-old-wi-fi-router-into-an-access-point/

1. Cover Router B's WAN (Internet) port with a piece of tape. You'll want to avoid using the port as doing so would prevent you from converting the router into an AP.

2. Find out what router A's range of IP addresses is. For example, if Router A's IP adress is 192.168.1.1 then we can safely assume its IP pool ranges from 192.168.1.2 to 192.168.1.254.

3. Manually set Router B's IP address to an unused IP within Router A's IP range. For example, you can make it 192.168.1.2. Just make sure you haven't and will not manually use this IP for any other device.

4. Turn off Router B's DHCP function.

And you're done. Now if you connect Router B (which is no longer a router) to Router A using a network cable (from LAN port to LAN port), it will function as an Access Point giving you better Wi-Fi range for your devices.

@shk292 because then you have 2 identical routers that have factory settings both will have the same static IP address for the LAN interface and this will cause a conflict on the LAN. Hence why i said connect it seperatly and either remove the static ip address and use DHCP or set a different static IP address

ps point 2, you cant assume that at all

I doubt that you can supply an IP address via DHCP to the LAN interface. DHCP client option applies to supplying IP address to WAN interface (not being used in this case).

we are not talking wan interface here at all.

device a is connected to b (used as an access point) so both routers are connected via the LAN interface.

the hg659 has a default ip address of 192.168.1.254, using 2 of them together you will need to change the ip address on one of them.

if the lan interface cant support dhcp then manually assign one
