Hi there

I am approaching finishing a basement development under my house, currently the wifi is very weak. What I have allowed for is an ethernet port from a cable that is connected to the exising modem router along with a wifi range extender in the hallway.

However I was thinking maybe a better option would be to have a second modem/router plugged into this ethernet port and use it as a repeater.

Would this work? And are there any recommendations for a good modem/router?

You want an accesspoint, not a repeater.

Plenty of extenders have that as an operating mode but not all of them so double check before you buy one.

Have a look at the Ubiquiti UniFi range of products (https://gowifi.co.nz) specifically the UniFi AC-LR. I wouldn't waste money on a consumer device if WiFi is what you care about. The other option is the Ubiquiti AmpliFi which is rated quite highly.

Definately a decent AP would be the go.

If your wanting to do this on the cheap, a modem with all routing functionality turned off (turned into a dumb AP) would be effective for what you need.

Yes, you are on the right track. Wired 2nd access point etc will outperform any wireless repeater system.
