The NBR reports Google is launching its Google WiFi product in New Zealand this week.

A smartphone app for controlling Google WiFi lets you put broadband on pause for kids’ devices, or create recurring pauses for dinner or homework with scheduled pause. It also shows you which devices are connected and how much bandwidth they’re using. You can also prioritise devices within your network so you can stream that latest TV episode without interruptions, Google says.

Google Wifi will be sold as a 1-pack for $229 (for an apartment or small home) and a 3-pack for $599 from Noel Leeming, Harvey Norman and JB Hi-Fi. The idea is you buy enough units as you need to cover your house. It's horses for courses, but a Google animation has two units covering an average ground floor.

Hopefully they add VLAN tagging support then it will be a nice option for people wanting to reduce their number of networking devices required

if vlan tagging is missing, that is lacking a crucial detail for it to become a full routing platform.

There is a live support chat on the Google Wifi site, I asked about VLAN tagging and the answer was no at this stage, and he confirmed that there are two options

AP only mode (Which means MESH capability cannot be used)
Double NAT (using your existing router)

But he understood my concerns and passed them on

So hold up, does this thing not just plug into your existing router and run the wireless portion? I understand one is wired, and the others can be either wired or use their own mesh network.

Is this not the case?

It's more than most UFB connections supply a tagged vlan to the next downstream device. The device needs to know to strip it out - it's trivial but hasnt been widely deployed across the globe. Some providers dont force tagged support on the connection, but many do incl spark and voda, which is most of the market.

Apple's kit for example doesnt support tagged vlans, which is most annoying.

I would be curious to see how well this works. To be honest more AP's generally tend to solve the problem this product is trying to solve. But I will wait for reviews/feedback.

Has anyone used these units? - I'm looking to upgrade my 9-year-old Apple Express/Extreme units and it looks like a good option. I note that people are concerned that they don't support VLAN. What are the implications of that?

If you're on UFB and your ISP uses VLAN tagging then you'll need to use some other device to remove the tagging. Without this, it won't work.
