Hi, thanks for taking the time.

I have a TPLink Wr1043ND v4 router. I wanted to put gargoyle firmware on. They don't support v4. Haven't bricked it yet :)

If you are aware of other firmware that support TL-WR1043ND v4 (similar to gargoyle etc) please respond.

What are you trying to do with QoS? Most people don't actually understand how useless QoS really is on a home router. You can only effectively control upstream data, and since most people aren't saturating their upstream unless they're on ADSL2+ you're not going to have any benefits in using it.

What I want to achieve is really two things. Monitor bandwidth consumption by device and setting of a data quota.

The internet bill is getting quite high. Difficult to know how the bill ought to be split. 180 nzd last month.

Gargoyle is what you want. QoS is not for limiting bandwidth.

I haven't looked, but can you get openwrt on the wr1043nd? As I believe gargoyle can be installed as packages. I gave up on the gargoyle as it couldn't do the tagging needed for ufb.

Which reminds me I have two wr1043nd routers sitting at home that I should sell.

Have a look at the LEDE Project https://lede-project.org Looks like Version 17.01.2 supports the WR1043 V4 LEDE Downloads WR1043

The latest snapshot version of OpenWRT also appears to support the WR1043 V4 https://wiki.openwrt.org/toh/tp-link/tl-wr1043nd

I haven't used any of these 3rd party firmware's in years, so not sure what device usage monitoring they have.

I use to use Gargoyle but gave up because of performance issues and the lack of an easy way to setup VLAN tagging for Fibre.

Thanks. Trying that solution now. I can confirm LEDE does have v4 supported.

I'm now bumbling my way through their 'step-by-step' guide *not idiot proof*

$180 that is quite expensive, im guessing your in a situation where unlimited broadband is not an option? As that would be the easiest/ most cost effective solution, probably save you some $$ Are you on A rural wireless connection?

Be aware that the 1043ND may have gigabit ports but can only route at 100Mbit or so. The more features you turn on and especially if it's not using hardware assisted NAT which will constrain you to the LEDE / OpenWRT version to the same kernel release as the factory image to get the hardware module to load.

I found it an acceptable router, just not sure how man clients you would want to hook up to it and if you plan to do usage monitor using Gargoyle don't expect good performance from it especially on 100Mbit+ UFB connections. But if you can't get Unlimited then you probably don't have UFB.
