Been searching a while trying to figure out how to limit download speeds to a specific domain/website without running all my traffic through a third party.

In my case slowing one video streaming site that gets over used here without limiting other video streaming sites. I don't want to block the site completely and don't want to limit the main offending users internet on other sites. Ideally I would use the HG659 router I have to do this if possible, I would consider getting additional hardware if needed and not to expensive. Any help would be much appreciated as no amount of google searching has helped me so far.

You simply won't be able to do that with the HG659. There also isn't many routers that could do it either.

Thanks, guess the router is not the way to go then.

I also have managed switch, model Cisco SLM2008 to use if it helps, or I could buy something if not too expensive, do you have any suggestions?

Mikrotik.

Spark Max Fibre using Mikrotik CCR1009-8G-1S-1S+, CRS125-24G-1S, Unifi UAP, U6-Pro, UAP-AC-M-Pro, Apple TV 4K (2022), Apple TV 4K (2017), iPad Air 1st gen, iPad Air 4th gen, iPhone 13, SkyNZ3151 (the white box). If it doesn't move then it's data cabled.

This will be hard, whatever equipment you use. I'm sure it's possible but it'll be a hassle to setup and maintain.

Is the concern that users are slowing others down, or just using lots of data? If it's just data, then go onto an unlimited plan (if available)

This will be difficult to manage.

The Grandstream GWN7000 supports device limiting - not sure about per webpage bandwidth limiting however.

Very easily done with a Mikrotik but you'll need to factor in the learning curve to understand how to actually configure the router and do this.

And make sure you catch all the URLs/IP addresses of the CDN used by that provider. And make sure they don't change things or add new servers/video delivery mechanisms etc.

Reading the Mikrotik website looks promising.

For me TVNZ is the main thing I am trying to limit bandwidth to currently so hoping they don't stream using too many different methods that I would need to block individually and don't change too them often.

^ this is the inherent issue. DNS sniffing only goes so far, and most sites use HTTPS. So you need somethng grunty = expensive.

If you are willing to buy equipment and learn how to configure it, consider buying a midrange PC and setting up a transparent proxy like Squid.

For data hoggers, just like in security, user education is actually the best answer.Have you spoken to the persons causing this issue? Have you made them aware and asked them to decrease the video quality selection?

Much cheaper option & near instant results.
