I have a desktop Computer with two Ethernet cards installed and operating. ETH0 is connceted to the internet via a Motorola Cable Modem to TelstraClear. I run Windows XP Pro. my flatmate has a laptop running XP Home. We want to connect the  2 systems so we can share the internet connection and files between the computers. I have a crossover cable between the 2 computers. Clearnet uses a STATIC IP address and I filled in the details MANUALLY when I set up the connection. It works fine online.
We have had this working before but forgot to write down details which we Will make sure we do this time.

Windows Network wizard is useless -no surprises there.

So, geeks how do we do this?

so you have lost your gateway and ip settings?
you will need to call TCL to get those again.

Do you both have WiFi?  If you did you could have the PC connect to the net with the cable, and make your PC wifi card an access point, then the laptop can connect to the pc wifi card as if it were connecting to an access point.

otherwise you need to use the internet connection sharing details in XP.  Make the laptop connect using DHCP, and enable the PC to share the internet out of the 2nd nic.

My computer is still working online obviously, but its getting my flamates lappy talking to mine over the ethernet crossover cable we have connected to the second Ethernet card in my computer.

We do NOT have either a router nor a WIFI connection.

This has worked before but forgot to write down the details of how we did it. Blind muddling first time. lol.
