Live in Auckland, but in the Whitford area which is semi rural and can't get fibre so have just upgraded to VDSL with Spark.

They sent a new modem (model HG659b) which before being switched we connected with the ADSL cable.  After switching we attempted to connect with the provided VDSL cable but surprise, surprise it doesn't fit our jack point (which is a dedicated internet line) or the two filters provided which are both ADSL .

A friend suggested we need a RJ45 adapter but when I rang Spark I was told that it's OK to use the ADSL cable?

Sounds a bit sus .

Just wondering if anyone can verify that.

Cheers

John

A lot of splitters before VDSL was a big thing here are VDSL rated, but some aren't. Depending on the tech they were installed for, they will have a standard telephone socket (BT, the rectangular one) or RJ45 (the square one).

Sounds like the RJ45 cable is the one you're trying to use, grab an old telephone cable (there might even be one in the modem box), and give that a swing.

Odds are decent that you'll find it'll work, as most of the filters I have come across are the VDSL compliant models, I've only seen a few of the ADSL only models knocking about. If you still have issues, call Spark back and let them know you're having issues and they will need to send a Chorus technician out. Also make sure you have Wiring Insurance, as otherwise the splitter replacement will cost you money.

Anything I say is the ramblings of an ill informed, opinionated so-and-so, and not representative of any of my past, present or future employers, and is also probably best disregarded.

If you upgraded from ADSL to VDSL, and the ADSL was working previously, just use that exact same cable that you used on your ADSL modem/router.

Totally fine to use the ADSL cable.

the VDSL modem is shipped with a few cables for different purposes. Calling it a "VDSL" cable in this day, is kinda a tad moot.

back when that packaging was put together, VDSL connections came with a splitter installation and a dedicated RJ45 jackpoint. that cable fitted in there :)

Thanks for that, all good to stay with the ADSL cable by the sounds of it.

Great :-)

Cheers
