I have my XP SP2 Machine (same problem with SP1) set up to only access infrastructure (access point) networks, and to ignore ad-hoc (peer-to-pee) networks. However, the system will sometimes connect to ad-hoc networks with the same SSID if the access point signal is very weak. This is irksome, because it makes it impossible to access the network. And no, changing the SSID is not an option. Thanks.

Why does the access point and the ad-hoc network use the same SSID? Are either under your direct control?

No, neither is. It's a university wireless network, and classmates' laptops that have been misconfigured.

Tell your classmates to get their act together and correctly configure their laptops...

Well, yes, that's an option. Anything I can do on my end though?
