Couple of days ago my QNAP TS-451+ NAS stopped responding.

After giving it a reboot the Status red light stays on solid red and the HDD lights  are solid green (in its current state the drives don't even start spinning as the NAS hasn't started them).

Via the QFinderPro app it discovers the NAS but the name has been reset and the IP is now DHCP (it was a static address). I can't web browse to the NAS using its new IP address nor can I log in with my admin logon or my own (admin account). I have done the reset at the back but it boots back into its current state.

Anyone see this before? Naturally I want to keep the data on the HDDs but it seems a NAS issue currently.

Are you still in the same range ie 192.168.1.XXX as had similar a couple of years ago and i had to reset router to same as QNAP then could log in and fix. I did find https://forum.qnap.com/ helpful but pretty snotty tbh but they could be worth a try.

Correct, it is in the same network still, went from 192.168.1.4 (static) to 192.168.1.189 (DHCP).

You reckon a router reboot and/or my Pi Hole (running local DNS and DHCP) will get me access again? Can test that out tonight.

If I am able to gain access again to the NAS, what things did you have to do after that?

Apparently some QNAP's were affected by a recently exploited security vulnerability on some routers and NAS's.

May want to check if yours is on the list / affected.

Have made some progress with QNAP Support.

Removing the drives and booting the NAS cleared the red status light, it then detected the NAS in QFinder (still with the incorrect name and IP) but now showed the correct model.

With the drives removed I was able to connect to the NAS via SSH and perform a firmware update, now apparently I'm upto the step of restoring the disk config to the NAS which should include the NAS name, IP also. Their instructions failed at that step so awaiting feedback from Support of where to go next.

My NAS is alive!

Lessons learnt, don't always trust vendor support and always take a NAS config backup.

Long story short:

  • NAS stopped responding, after giving it reboots I still couldn't connect to it via IP, red status light on NAS, no disk activity
  • Contacted QNAP Support using their online support portal
  • Support Engineer got me:

    • to remove the disks and reboot the NAS, NAS now has no red status light.

      • I can now see the NAS in the QFinder app, hostname and IP (was static, now dynamic) have reset to defaults
    • perform a firmware update using SSH to device while the disks are out

      • firmware updated successfully to suggested version
    • insert the disks while the NAS is on and see if they get detected while running another SSH command

      • command came back saying it couldn't read from the disks
      • Engineer said my disks are bad
      • never had any warnings about the disks prior to the NAS not responding, mentioned this to Engineer but he said the disks are still bad
    • perform a test on the drives to check the health of them using a disk tool

      • I didn't run a disk test but said I had and the disks were all good
    • now says the disk controller in the NAS is faulty and to return the NAS to the reseller to be sent away

      • NAS came from PBTech who were really good and said they have to send it to Singapore to get it looked at
  • I tested web browsing to the new IP of the NAS and it mentioned:

"Hard Drive(s) with QNAP Signature Detected

The system has detected that some of the installed hard drives have previously been used in a QNAP NAS. Select "Restore Factory Settings" to restore the system to its original settings (this will NOT delete any                        data on those hard drives.) Or select "Initialize System" to continue the installation process (this WILL delete all of the data on those hard drives.)"

  • Mentioned this to the Engineer who said that running 'Restore Factory Setting' will be ok (no data loss) and see what happens. Engineer from here has gone quiet even after updating them with the info below.
  • After 5mins my NAS is alive and I can now web browse to it normally using the default credentials.
  • Went into the Storage app to see the health of the disks, all 'GOOD'
  • Went straight into File Station to see what data I can see, under 'Home' (default QNAP NAS share) it has our personal family data in there, but no 'Photos' share, no 'Music' share, no 'Movies' share.

    • Thought this is good but wondering where the rest of our data is because running the Restore Factory Settings wasn't meant to remove data even though our 'Home' data is still there.
  • Decided to create a new 'Photos' share and BOOM all the photos are there, created a new 'Music' share and BOOM again.

    • This is good, I just need to recreate my existing shares however I couldn't remember them all and also the exact name I called them all
    • Since I now know my data is here, the previous share name info must be somewhere.
    • Searched all around the 'Storage' app area on the NAS but nothing.
    • Decided to SSH onto the NAS and see what I can see

      • Under the /Share folder I can only see the new shares I have just created and a bunch of HDA_DATA, HDB_DATA etc folders that are empty.
      • Found a CACHE_(can't recall the rest of the name, will edit this later), looked inside and BOOM, all my old share names!
    • Recreated the remaining shares.

Took quite some time to get to this point but very relived!

Since this I have:

  • finished configuring the NAS config that was wiped like recreating the users, re-download the QNAP apps I had
  • taken a recent backup on the NAS config which includes: users, shares etc etc
  • taken an external backup of all of the important data (which will be done more regularly now!)
  • looked at getting two additional disks
